HMPV Cases in India: Rising Concerns Over Infant Vulnerability

RR Team, January 6, 2025

The first confirmed cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in India have been reported in Bengaluru. An 8-month-old male infant and a 3-month-old female infant were diagnosed with the respiratory virus after being admitted to Baptist Hospital due to bronchopneumonia. Both infants are currently recovering, according to official reports.

What is HMPV?

HMPV is a respiratory virus that affects the lungs and airways, posing higher risks to infants, elderly individuals, and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms of HMPV include:

Fever

Persistent cough

Nasal congestion

Difficulty breathing

Fatigue

In severe cases, it may lead to complications like bronchiolitis or pneumonia. However, most infections are mild and resolve without hospitalization.

Current Situation in India

Health officials have clarified that these cases do not represent a new variant of HMPV. According to Karnataka Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao, HMPV has been in circulation globally, including in India, for years. The recent diagnoses highlight the need for vigilance but not alarm.

The Union Health Ministry stated there is no significant surge in Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) or Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI) cases in India. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely.

Precautionary Measures

Dr. Atul Goel, Director-General of Health Services, emphasized basic hygiene practices to prevent the spread:

Frequent handwashing

Avoiding close contact with unwell individuals

Disinfecting commonly touched surfaces

Staying home when sick

Parents should watch for signs of respiratory distress in infants, such as bluish lips or severe fatigue, and seek immediate medical care if these symptoms occur.

Treatment and Outlook

Currently, there is no specific antiviral treatment for HMPV. Supportive care, such as hydration and fever management, is the primary approach. Experts reassured that hospitals are equipped to handle the seasonal rise in respiratory illnesses, with adequate resources available.

Global Perspective

While reports from China suggest a new variant of HMPV, Indian health experts maintain that the situation in India remains under control. Increased awareness and timely intervention are critical to managing the virus effectively.

Stay informed and prioritize preventive measures to safeguard yourself and your loved ones from respiratory illnesses.
