PM Modi Inaugurates Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, Highlights India’s Role as a Skilled Talent Hub

RR Team, January 9, 2025January 9, 2025

Bhubaneswar, January 9, 2025: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) convention in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, on Thursday. This biennial event celebrates the contributions of the Indian diaspora and fosters their engagement in India’s development journey. The theme for this year is “Diaspora’s Contribution to a Viksit Bharat” (Developed India).

During the event, PM Modi emphasized India’s commitment to fulfilling the global demand for skilled talent. “India is not just a young nation; it is also a nation of skilled youth,” he said, underlining the government’s efforts to ensure that Indian professionals and workers going abroad are equipped with necessary skills. He also called for documenting the journeys and achievements of the Indian diaspora worldwide, describing them as India’s ambassadors to the world.

The three-day convention, jointly organized by the Ministry of External Affairs and the Odisha government, commenced on January 8. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar had earlier urged Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) to contribute actively to building a developed India. He also highlighted the young diaspora’s role in enhancing India’s global perception.

Odisha CM Promotes State as Investment Destination

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi encouraged the diaspora to participate in Odisha’s growth story, describing the state as a “land of limitless opportunities.” He highlighted Odisha’s advancements in industries like IT, renewable energy, and climate-resilient agriculture. Majhi also noted the state’s efforts in developing ports and maritime infrastructure to bolster trade with Southeast Asia.

Calling Odisha a “holistic hub of diversified cultures,” he showcased its contributions to India’s classical arts, such as Odissi dance and Pattachitra paintings, and its rich cultural heritage linked to Jagannath culture. He invited the diaspora to explore investment opportunities in Odisha and contribute to realizing the vision of a “Viksit Bharat” by 2047.

Global Recognition of India’s Contributions

President of Trinidad and Tobago Christine Carla Kangaloo, addressing the event virtually, praised India’s significant contributions to global civilization, citing innovations in mathematics, the establishment of ancient universities, and India’s spiritual teachings.

The Pravasi Bharatiya Express, a special tourist train for the diaspora, was flagged off remotely by PM Modi during the convention. This train will visit several religious and cultural sites across India.

The event concludes on January 10, with President Droupadi Murmu set to present the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Awards, honoring exemplary contributions by members of the Indian diaspora.
