Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated three Made-in-India naval combatants—INS Surat, INS Nilgiri, and INS Vaghsheer—at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai on January 15, 2025. This marks a significant advancement in India’s defense manufacturing and maritime security capabilities.
Highlights of the Naval Combatants
INS Nilgiri: The first ship of the P17A Stealth Frigate Project, designed by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau, it incorporates advanced stealth features, enhanced survivability, and superior seakeeping capabilities.
INS Surat: The fourth and final ship of the P15B Guided Missile Destroyer Project, it stands among the largest and most sophisticated destroyers globally, with 75% indigenous content and cutting-edge weapon-sensor systems.
INS Vaghsheer: The sixth and final submarine of the P75 Scorpene Project, it showcases India’s growing expertise in submarine construction in collaboration with France’s Naval Group.
PM Modi’s Address
Speaking at the ceremony, PM Modi lauded the indigenous development of these combatants, emphasizing their significance for India’s maritime strength.
“Today’s India is emerging as a major maritime power. On this sacred land of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, who laid the foundation for India’s naval strength, we are taking a significant step towards strengthening our 21st-century Navy. This is the first time a destroyer, a frigate, and a submarine have been commissioned together,” he stated.
Defence Minister’s Remarks
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh described the commissioning as a testament to India’s growing influence in the Indian Ocean Region. He highlighted the strategic importance of the Indian Ocean in the evolving global scenario, calling it a pivotal region for economic and geo-strategic interests.

The commissioning of these naval assets underscores the success of the “Atmanirbhar Bharat” initiative, showcasing India’s ability to design and manufacture advanced defense equipment.
