Indian Railways is on the brink of a major transformation with the upcoming Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Set, promising an unparalleled blend of speed, luxury, and convenience for long-distance travelers. The first 16-car Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Set recently completed a rigorous trial, covering a 540-kilometer stretch between Mumbai and Ahmedabad, achieving a top speed of 180 km/h. Manufactured by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai, this cutting-edge train was tested extensively in Kota before being cleared for long-distance trials. With its successful performance, Indian Railways is now poised to introduce nine more sleeper train sets by the end of the year.
This development is a significant step forward in railway modernization, ensuring passengers experience comfort and efficiency like never before. The Vande Bharat Sleeper is designed with world-class features, including automatic doors, reclining cushioned berths, onboard WiFi, and an aircraft-like design, making overnight travel more enjoyable and seamless. With the success of the 136 Vande Bharat trains currently operating on shorter routes, the sleeper version is expected to redefine long-haul journeys.
To support this ambitious rollout, Indian Railways has placed an order for propulsion systems for 50 rakes of the 24-car Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Sets. Leading Indian manufacturers Medha and Alstom have been entrusted with delivering these systems, with full-scale production set to begin in 2026-27. Once operational, the trains will be divided into three classes—AC 1st Class, AC 2-Tier, and AC 3-Tier—offering a total seating capacity of 1,128 passengers. Advanced safety measures such as crash buffers, deformation tubes, and fire barrier walls further enhance passenger security.
Before the first Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Set is officially introduced for public use, the Research Designs & Standards Organisation (RDSO) will issue a final certification after evaluating trial performances. The railway safety commissioner will also conduct an assessment at the train’s maximum speed to ensure all safety and operational parameters are met.
This initiative represents India’s commitment to self-reliance and innovation in railway technology. As Indian Railways moves ahead with this groundbreaking project, the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Set is set to usher in a new era of fast, comfortable, and world-class travel for millions of passengers across the country.
