Violence Erupts in Nagpur Over Aurangzeb Tomb Protest, Curfew Imposed to Restore Order

RR Team, March 19, 2025March 19, 2025

Tensions have gripped Nagpur following violent clashes that erupted after protests over the demand to remove Mughal emperor Aurangzeb’s tomb in Khuldabad. The situation escalated on March 17 when demonstrations led by right-wing groups turned volatile, leading to widespread unrest, damage to property, and injuries to both civilians and police personnel. The city remains under curfew in several areas, with authorities working to restore normalcy and prevent further disturbances.

The protests initially began as a demonstration by members of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal, who submitted a memorandum demanding the removal of Aurangzeb’s tomb, citing historical grievances. However, what started as a peaceful protest soon turned violent amid rising communal tensions. Reports suggest that rumors of religious disrespect spread rapidly, sparking outrage and clashes in Nagpur’s old city area. The violence continued for hours, with mobs pelting stones, torching vehicles, and engaging in confrontations with law enforcement.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has strongly condemned the attack on police personnel and vowed strict action against those responsible. In an impassioned address to the Assembly, he stated that such acts against law enforcement would not be tolerated and that the culprits would face the harshest possible punishment. The state government has assured citizens that steps are being taken to maintain peace and prevent the situation from escalating further. Meanwhile, authorities have intensified their efforts to identify those involved, leading to multiple arrests.

The impact of the violence has been deeply felt by local residents, many of whom now fear for their safety. Small businesses in affected areas remain shut, and daily life has come to a standstill. Families caught in the midst of the unrest describe a sense of helplessness as they witnessed the destruction of property and the disruption of communal harmony. Law enforcement officials have urged the public to remain calm and refrain from spreading misinformation that could further inflame tensions.

In the wake of the incident, political leaders from various parties have weighed in on the issue, with some calling for the removal of the protected status of Aurangzeb’s tomb to prevent further conflicts. Others have criticized what they see as an attempt to politicize history and stir unrest for electoral gains. The opposition has accused the ruling government of failing to prevent the violence, while the administration has defended its actions, emphasizing the need for law and order.

As investigations continue, authorities have appealed for cooperation from the public in maintaining peace. Community leaders are also stepping in to mediate and prevent further clashes. The situation remains fragile, but many hope that dialogue and a collective effort will help in restoring calm. For now, Nagpur remains on edge, with its residents yearning for peace and stability amidst the chaos.
