Ministry of Education launches “Baalpan ki Kavita initiative: Restoring Bhartiya rhymes/poems for young children”

RR Team, March 25, 2025March 26, 2025

In a heartfelt effort to reconnect young children with India’s rich linguistic and cultural heritage, the Ministry of Education has launched the “Baalpan ki Kavita” initiative. This program, aligned with the vision of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, aims to revive and promote Indian nursery rhymes and poems across all Bhartiya Bhashas and English. Recognizing the importance of early childhood education and the role of multilingualism in shaping young minds, this initiative seeks to create a collection of joyful and contextually relevant poems that will help children engage with the world around them in their mother tongue.

With the growing influence of globalized content, traditional Indian rhymes have slowly faded from common use. The “Baalpan ki Kavita” initiative hopes to change this by ensuring that young learners can experience the magic of their native languages through poetry that resonates with their cultural environment. By introducing these rhymes at the foundational stage, children can develop a deeper connection with their heritage while enhancing their linguistic and cognitive skills in a fun and natural way.

To bring this vision to life, the Department of School Education & Literacy (DoSE&L), in collaboration with MyGov, has opened the initiative to public participation. Contributors are invited to submit existing folk rhymes or newly composed joyful poems under three categories: Pre-primary (ages 3-6), Grade 1 (ages 6-7), and Grade 2 (ages 7-8). Entries are welcomed in all Indian languages, including English, with a particular focus on regional rhymes that hold cultural significance.

The contest, running from March 26 to April 22, 2025, on the MyGov platform, offers an inclusive space for poets, educators, and language enthusiasts to contribute to the preservation and revival of traditional Indian rhymes. There is no entry fee, making it accessible to all who wish to participate in this meaningful endeavor.

This initiative is not just about collecting poems; it is about safeguarding India’s linguistic diversity and giving young children a joyful, familiar, and culturally enriching start to their education. By embracing and celebrating the beauty of Indian languages through poetry, the “Baalpan ki Kavita” initiative aims to build a strong foundation for learning that is rooted in tradition yet open to the world.
