Indian Railways Accelerates Solar Energy Adoption with 2,249 Installations Nationwide

RR Team, April 2, 2025April 2, 2025

Indian Railways has made significant strides in its transition towards renewable energy, demonstrating a firm commitment to sustainability and energy efficiency. As of February 2025, the national transporter has successfully installed 209 MW of solar power capacity across 2,249 railway stations and service buildings. This initiative aligns with the government’s broader push for renewable energy adoption and environmental conservation.

The progress in solar power adoption has been remarkable, with 1,489 new installations in the last five years—more than double the 628 installations in the preceding five-year period. Rajasthan has emerged as the frontrunner in this expansion, leading all states and Union Territories with 275 installations, followed closely by Maharashtra (270) and West Bengal (237). Other states such as Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka have also made commendable contributions to the initiative.

The Indian Railways’ approach to renewable energy is multifaceted, involving the procurement of energy through various power purchase agreements and hybrid solutions, integrating solar and wind power for round-the-clock energy availability. The solar installations are primarily set up under the developer mode, ensuring cost-effectiveness and long-term sustainability.

However, this transition has not been without challenges. Regulatory constraints, power evacuation issues, and connectivity hurdles posed significant obstacles. To overcome these, Indian Railways has been in continuous dialogue with state governments and transmission utilities, working to ensure seamless integration of solar power into the railway network.

Despite these challenges, the results have been promising. The move towards solar energy not only reduces the railways’ carbon footprint but also leads to considerable financial savings in the long run. This initiative serves as a testament to India’s commitment to clean energy and a more sustainable future.

The data highlighting the state-wise progress underscores the extensive efforts made across the country. With states like Gujarat, Odisha, Bihar, and Assam also showing substantial progress, it is evident that solar energy is becoming a cornerstone of Indian Railways’ operational strategy.

The Union Minister of Railways, Information & Broadcasting, and Electronics & Information Technology, Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, provided these insights in a written reply to the Lok Sabha. His statement reaffirmed the government’s dedication to renewable energy expansion within the railways and emphasized the continued efforts required to enhance energy security and environmental sustainability.

As Indian Railways moves forward with its ambitious renewable energy goals, this large-scale solar adoption stands as a shining example of how infrastructural development can harmonize with environmental responsibility. The initiative not only ensures a greener railway network but also sets a precedent for other sectors to follow in embracing sustainable energy solutions.
