“President Droupadi Murmu Welcomes Angolan President João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço for Historic First State Visit to India”

RR Team, May 3, 2025May 12, 2025

On May 3, 2025, President Droupadi Murmu warmly welcomed President João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço of Angola at Rashtrapati Bhavan, marking his first state visit to India. The occasion was significant as both nations celebrate the 40th anniversary of their diplomatic relations. President Murmu expressed her pleasure in hosting the Angolan leader, highlighting the historic and timely nature of his visit.

During their discussions, President Murmu acknowledged the leadership of President Lourenço, who recently assumed the Chair of the African Union. She also noted that during India’s G20 Presidency, the African Union was granted full membership, a step that ensures Africa’s voice is now more prominently represented in global decision-making.

President Murmu emphasized the deep friendship between India and African nations, including Angola. She reaffirmed India’s commitment to fostering mutually beneficial and sustainable partnerships with African countries through initiatives like the India-Africa Forum Summit. She praised Angola’s pivotal role in promoting peace, security, and stability across Africa, recognizing the nation’s efforts in strengthening the continent’s future.

The two leaders also discussed the global threat of terrorism, which continues to impact many nations. President Murmu expressed gratitude for President Lourenço’s support following the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir, where he condemned the violence in all its forms.

In her address, President Murmu also acknowledged the valuable contributions of the Indian diaspora in Angola, describing them as a vital bridge between the two nations, both culturally and economically. She stressed India’s longstanding commitment to championing the aspirations of developing countries on the world stage.

Both leaders agreed that India and Angola should continue to collaborate not only for the advancement of their people but also for the greater good of the Global South. Their discussions underscored the shared vision of both countries in contributing to a more just and equitable global order.

This exchange marked a renewed commitment between India and Angola to work together in shaping a prosperous future for both nations and the broader African continent.
