Shashi Tharoor’s Inclusion in Global Delegation Sparks Political Row, Raises Questions About Unity

RR Team, May 18, 2025May 17, 2025

A recent government decision to appoint Congress MP Shashi Tharoor as the head of a diplomatic delegation to the United States has ignited a fresh round of political sparring between the BJP and the Congress. The delegation is part of India’s global outreach following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack and the retaliatory strikes under Operation Sindoor, targeting terror camps across the border.

Tharoor, a respected parliamentarian with decades of diplomatic experience and a distinguished career at the United Nations, was chosen by the Centre to lead the outreach, intended to brief global partners on India’s response and security concerns. However, the announcement was met with surprise within the Congress party itself, as his name was not among the official nominations submitted by the party leadership for the outreach mission.

This internal disconnect soon became a matter of public discourse. Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh confirmed that the list, personally submitted by Rahul Gandhi to Union Minister Kiren Rijiju, did not include Tharoor. The development raised eyebrows and invited commentary from both sides of the political aisle.

BJP’s Amit Malviya was quick to seize the moment, questioning why someone of Tharoor’s stature and foreign policy expertise would be excluded from his own party’s recommendation. “No one can deny Shashi Tharoor’s eloquence, his long experience as a United Nations official, and his deep insights on matters of foreign policy,” Malviya remarked, hinting at internal rifts within the Congress.

While the political back-and-forth continues, the larger context remains crucial. The diplomatic outreach following a significant terror incident is not just a ceremonial gesture—it is a strategic move to gather global support and reaffirm India’s position on international platforms. At such a time, unity among Indian representatives, regardless of party affiliation, is essential for credibility and coherence in foreign policy.

Tharoor’s inclusion, though controversial within political circles, is being viewed by many as a practical and strategic choice, given his expertise. The public and observers are left to hope that personal and party differences do not overshadow the collective national interest, especially in moments requiring a united front on the global stage.
