Tragedy in Panchkula: Seven Members of Dehradun Family Found Dead in Car, Suicide Pact Suspected

RR Team, May 27, 2025May 27, 2025

In a deeply tragic incident that has left the communities of Dehradun and Panchkula in mourning, seven members of a single family were found dead in a parked car in Sector 27 of Panchkula late Monday night. Authorities believe the family may have entered into a suicide pact, possibly driven by overwhelming financial distress.

The deceased have been identified as Praveen Mittal, 42, a resident of Dehradun, along with his parents, wife, and their three young children—two daughters and a son. The family had reportedly traveled to Panchkula to attend a Hanuman Katha event at Bageshwar Dham. After the religious function, they were expected to return to Dehradun. Instead, the devastating discovery was made by locals, who spotted the family unresponsive inside a locked car parked on a quiet street.

Eyewitnesses immediately alerted emergency services after noticing signs of distress. Police teams arrived promptly and forcibly opened the car doors. The victims, all unconscious at the time, were rushed to nearby hospitals, including Panchkula Civil Hospital. Tragically, doctors declared all seven “brought dead” on arrival.

Preliminary investigations point to suicide, and a handwritten note recovered from the vehicle appears to support this conclusion. Police sources suggest that the family was burdened by substantial unpaid debt, which may have pushed them to this heart-wrenching decision.

The scene was soon swarmed by forensic teams and senior police officials. Panchkula DCP Himadri Kaushik and DCP (Law & Order) Amit Dahiya were among those who arrived to oversee the investigation. “It is too early to make definitive statements,” DCP Dahiya said. “We are in the process of contacting extended family members and continuing with the formal inquest.”

This heartbreaking incident has once again underscored the silent, often invisible weight of financial distress that can drive even close-knit families to unimaginable ends. As authorities work to piece together the circumstances that led to this tragedy, there is a collective sense of grief—and reflection—among the public.

In these difficult moments, words often fall short. Our thoughts are with the grieving relatives and everyone affected by this unimaginable loss. May the departed souls find peace, and may their story serve as a reminder of the urgent need for stronger mental health and financial support systems for families in crisis.
