Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney officially invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the G7 summit in Canada. The event will take place in Kananaskis from June 15 to 17, 2025. This invitation marks a positive shift in India-Canada relations after years of diplomatic strain.
PM Modi expressed his enthusiasm about attending the summit. He also looks forward to meeting Mark Carney. Modi shared this update on his social media platform X, emphasizing that both countries will work together with renewed energy and mutual respect.

Background: Strained Relations Under Trudeau
The India-Canada relationship hit a low point during former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s term. In 2023, Trudeau accused “Indian agents” of involvement in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. India denied the charges. Canada has not provided any proof.
Tensions increased when Canada called the Indian High Commissioner a “person of interest” in the case. India strongly rejected this charge. India responded by recalling its High Commissioner and some diplomats. It also expelled six Canadian officials, including Canada’s acting High Commissioner Stewart Ross Wheeler.
Carney’s Election Brings Hope
The diplomatic chill began to thaw after Trudeau resigned earlier this year. Mark Carney’s election as Canada’s new Prime Minister raised hopes. Though he belongs to the same Liberal Party as Trudeau, Carney stressed the importance of good ties with India. He said the countries could resolve differences with mutual respect.
Modi’s Invitation: A Significant Gesture
Observers see Carney’s invitation to PM Modi as a major step to rebuild trust. It also rejects pressure from the Khalistani lobby, which wanted to block Modi’s visit. This invitation shows Canada’s clear desire to strengthen relations with India.
PM Modi’s Statement
PM Modi wrote on X:
“Glad to receive a call from Prime Minister @MarkJCarney of Canada. I congratulated him on his recent election victory and thanked him for the invitation to the G7 Summit in Kananaskis later this month.
As vibrant democracies bound by deep people-to-people ties, India and Canada will work together with renewed vigour, guided by mutual respect and shared interests. I look forward to our meeting at the Summit.”
The Road Ahead
Experts see Modi’s attendance as a positive sign for future cooperation. It can open doors for stronger economic, political, and cultural partnerships. After years of diplomatic challenges, both countries seem ready to start a new chapter.
