Empowering India’s Youth for a Green Tomorrow
India has taken a bold step toward a greener future. On June 12, 2025, the Directorate General of Training (DGT), under the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE), teamed up with Shell India to launch a nationwide Electric Vehicle (EV) and Green Skills training program.
This forward-looking initiative is aimed at students in Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and National Skill Training Institutes (NSTIs). More than just classroom instruction, it promises hands-on experience and opens up direct pathways to jobs in renewable energy and electric mobility.
“We are equipping young Indians with the skills to shape—and not just participate in—the global green economy.”
— Shri Jayant Chaudhary, Minister of State, MSDE
🧪 What’s in the Program?
The program, implemented by Edunet Foundation—Shell’s skilling partner—will run across five major states:
👉 Delhi-NCR, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka.
It offers three levels of immersive training:
-
240-hour Advanced EV Technician Course at four NSTIs
-
90-hour EV Job-Oriented Course at 12 ITIs with Shell-supported labs
-
50-hour Foundational Green Skills Module at other ITIs without physical labs
Each level is designed to build knowledge step-by-step. The curriculum includes:
-
✅ Hands-on EV diagnostics with real-world fault simulations
-
✅ Battery management training focused on lifecycle and performance
-
✅ Use of digital tools for predictive maintenance and system checks
-
✅ Rigorous safety and compliance training through practical exercises
Additionally, over 250 trainers will be certified to ensure standardized, high-quality instruction.
🏫 Cutting-Edge EV Labs
A standout feature of the program is the creation of dedicated EV Skill Labs. These labs replicate real-world industrial environments, using advanced diagnostic systems and simulations. Students won’t just learn—they’ll practice what they learn using industry-grade tools.
At the end of their training, each participant will receive a co-branded certification from Shell and DGT. This boosts their employability and positions them well for roles in India’s fast-growing clean energy sector.
💼 From Learning to Earning: Career-Ready Skilling
This program is more than just education—it’s a career launchpad.
Graduates gain access to:
-
💼 Structured placement assistance in EV and green energy sectors
-
📜 Recognized certifications that stand out in job applications
-
🔁 Training of Trainers (ToT) modules to scale quality instruction
“We’re bringing real-world demand into the classroom. This is industry-aligned, employability-first training.”
— Smt. Trishaljit Sethi, Director General, DGT
🔋 Why Now? The Green Jobs Imperative
India’s shift to electric mobility is no longer just a vision—it’s happening. Initiatives like FAME (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles) and progressive state-level EV policies in Delhi, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu are paving the way.
However, infrastructure alone won’t drive the green revolution. A certified, skilled workforce is essential to support it.
That’s the gap this program fills. It turns India’s youth into EV technicians, battery analysts, and mobility engineers. These roles are vital to achieving the country’s net-zero emission targets and powering a sustainable economy.
