Pralhad Joshi speaking at Global Wind Day in Bengaluru

India Puts Wind Energy at Heart of Net-Zero Strategy

RR Team, June 15, 2025June 15, 2025

India Puts Wind Energy at the Centre of Net-Zero Vision

On Global Wind Day 2025, Union Minister Pralhad Joshi emphasized wind energy’s central role in India’s renewable future. Speaking in Bengaluru, alongside Union Minister Shripad Yesso Naik and Karnataka’s Energy Minister K.G. George, Joshi outlined the government’s roadmap for powering India’s manufacturing and sustainability goals through wind energy.

Wind Energy: The Core of India’s Green Vision

“Wind energy is not just a component—it is at the heart of Atmanirbhar Bharat,” Joshi stated.

India aims to meet 50% of its energy needs from non-fossil fuel sources by 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2070. For this, wind energy will play a pivotal role—not just for electricity, but for powering India’s growing manufacturing sector.

PM Narendra Modi’s vision prioritizes renewable energy for industrial use and conventional energy for household consumption. With India’s manufacturing sector expanding rapidly, reliable and clean energy is no longer optional—it’s essential.

India’s Wind Energy Landscape: Global Ranking & Goals

India has already become the fourth largest country in wind power capacity and the third largest in renewable energy production worldwide. Ten years ago, this growth seemed unlikely. Today, it’s a reality.

As of 2025:

  • 33 wind turbine models are manufactured by 14 Indian companies

  • Turbines range from 225 kW to 5.2 MW

  • India is expanding wind generation into Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, and Odisha

Three Key Focus Areas for Growth

Joshi identified three core priorities to unlock wind energy’s full potential:

  1. Hybrid Power Systems
Combine wind, solar, and battery storage (BESS) for 24/7 power and grid stability.

  2. Competitive Tariffs
Lower the cost below the current ₹3.90/unit to attract more investment and adoption.

  3. Efficient Manufacturing
Boost local efficiency to meet domestic targets and increase exports of wind tech globally.

Five National Priorities for Wind Expansion

India’s ambitious wind energy push includes:

  • Expanding to new states like Odisha and Telangana

  • Launching offshore projects, with 4 GW identified in Gujarat and Tamil Nadu

  • Integrating wind into firm green power strategies via storage-linked models

  • Modernizing the grid with AI-based forecasting tools

  • Boosting domestic manufacturing across the wind power value chain

Budget Boost and Policy Support

This year, the renewable energy budget has increased by 53% to ₹26,549 crore, with a large share directed at wind energy.

“The transition to renewables is not a choice—it is inevitable,” said Joshi. “States must lead this shift. Delays in land and transmission clearances must end.”

He added that India’s wind industry is now cost-competitive globally and ready to meet future demands.

Reports and Recognitions Released

Two key documents were released:

  • Wind Energy Roadmap

  • Wind Manufacturing Roadmap

These will guide India’s journey toward a robust, self-reliant wind ecosystem. The best-performing states in wind capacity addition were also awarded:

  • Karnataka: 1331.48 MW

  • Tamil Nadu: 1136.37 MW

  • Gujarat: 954.76 MW

About Global Wind Day 2025

Celebrated on June 15, Global Wind Day highlights the role of wind energy in achieving global sustainability. The event in Bengaluru gathered stakeholders from:

  • Central and State Governments

  • CPSUs and DISCOMs

  • Academia and Industry Bodies like WIPPA, IWTMA, and IWPA

The event fostered dialogue on critical issues like tariff reforms, manufacturing competitiveness, and grid integration.
