Thai Supreme Patriarch’s India Visit Deepens Buddhist Bonds

RR Team, June 17, 2025June 18, 2025

Thai Patriarch’s Visit Strengthens Buddhist Ties

A senior Thai Buddhist delegation is currently visiting India on a six-day spiritual and cultural tour. This significant visit reinforces the deep historical and religious ties shared by the two nations.

🕉️ Ancient Spiritual Bonds

During his recent visit to Thailand, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Wat Pho Temple, one of the country’s most sacred Buddhist sites. While there, he presented a replica of the Ashokan Lion Capital, a gesture symbolizing India’s commitment to nurturing Buddhist heritage. He also announced that the Holy Relics of Devni Mori, discovered in Gujarat, would soon be sent to Thailand for public veneration.

In a meaningful response, a high-level delegation from Thailand arrived in India. This group, led by H.E. Somdet Phra Thiranyanamuni, Acting Supreme Patriarch of Thailand, includes respected monks and scholars. The Government of India has accorded them the status of “Guest of the State,” emphasizing the importance of the visit.

🙏 Sacred Prayers in Delhi

One of the major highlights of the visit was the prayer ceremony at the National Museum in New Delhi. Monks from the Thai delegation offered chants in Pali at the Buddhist Relics Shrine. The event, hosted by the International Buddhist Confederation (IBC), served as a serene reminder of the enduring reverence both countries share for Lord Buddha.

🤝 Dialogue with Indian Leaders

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju welcomed the delegation and shared how India and Thailand are connected not only by Buddhism but also through deeper civilizational roots. The minister spoke of common cultural links including Hinduism, Sanskrit, and the epic Ramayana, which lives on in Thai folklore as Ramakien.

He encouraged Buddhist scholars and pilgrims from both nations to increase cross-border visits. More spiritual and academic exchanges could further deepen mutual respect and understanding.

Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat also met the visiting monks. He recalled the overwhelming response from Thai citizens during last year’s exposition of Buddha’s relics sent from India. More than 4 million devotees had paid homage. Recognizing the Patriarch’s interest in Hindu mythology, the minister extended a personal invitation to visit Ayodhya, a city of spiritual significance.

🧘 Profile of the Patriarch

Somdet Phra Thiranyanamuni holds a revered position in Thailand’s Buddhist community. As the Abbot of Wat Thepsirin and Chairman of the Pali Education Committee, he plays a pivotal role in shaping Buddhist education. His duties span four main departments responsible for Pali studies, general education, and monastic discipline.

Internationally, he has made significant contributions. Notably, he co-founded Wat Buddha Dallas in the United States and chairs the Dallas Buddhist Temple. His service includes the restoration of ancient structures, temples, and the launch of several welfare initiatives.

To honor King Bhumibol’s 83rd birthday, he established a charitable fund to assist underprivileged heart patients in Thailand. This act of merit exemplifies his compassionate leadership.

🌍 Diplomacy Through Dharma

This visit is more than ceremonial—it reflects the power of Buddhist diplomacy. As the birthplace of Buddhism, India remains a spiritual home for millions of Buddhists worldwide. Thailand, with its majority Buddhist population, shares this sacred lineage.

Cultural and religious diplomacy, such as this visit, plays a powerful role in shaping peaceful international relations. Both nations stand to benefit from stronger pilgrimage circuits, joint heritage programs, and deeper scholarly engagement. Sites like Bodh Gaya, Nalanda, and Ayodhya could soon become central hubs for mutual spiritual journeys.
