Why Chirag Paswan May Contest Bihar Polls

RR Team, June 23, 2025June 23, 2025

What Did Nitish Kumar Ask?

During a meeting ahead of PM Modi’s rally in Siwan, Bihar CM Nitish Kumar asked Union Minister Chirag Paswan why he intends to contest in the upcoming Bihar assembly elections. According to Chirag’s brother-in-law and MP Arun Bharti, Nitish said, “You’re a Union Minister with a long career ahead. Why enter state polls now?”

The remarks highlight growing concern within Janata Dal United (JDU) about Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas)‘s influence in the state, especially as the party signals intentions to contest all 243 seats.

Is Chirag Eyeing the CM Post?

Chirag has neither confirmed nor denied his ambitions, but his slogan “Bihar is calling” keeps surfacing. Bharti stated that Chirag aims to “remove the RJD’s jungle raj” and participate directly in the development of Bihar.

Interestingly, RJD’s Tejashwi Yadav hit back, saying, “Chirag should openly admit he wants to be CM instead of this drama.” This adds fuel to the speculation about his future plans.

What Does the NDA Stand to Lose?

Seat-sharing within the NDA could get complicated if Chirag’s LJP (Ram Vilas) refuses to align on constituency decisions. Nitish’s discomfort may be stemming from the fact that Chirag’s rally in Nalanda—Nitish’s home turf—on June 29 could attract over 2 lakh supporters.

Despite this, Chirag maintains that he will consult his party before final decisions and will return to seek Nitish’s blessings. NDA’s internal equations are in flux, especially with opposition parties watching closely.

What Lies Ahead for Bihar?

With assembly elections nearing, Bihar’s political landscape is shifting. Chirag’s aggressive stance may either rejuvenate the NDA base or create friction within the alliance. Meanwhile, the opposition senses an opportunity.

Whether or not he runs for CM, Chirag Paswan has made it clear—he wants to lead from the front in Bihar’s politics, not from the sidelines in Delhi.
