Cabinet Marks 50 Years of Emergency with Solemn Tribute

RR Team, June 26, 2025June 25, 2025

Cabinet Recalls Emergency, Pays Silent Tribute

On June 26, 2025, the Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, passed a resolution to mark 50 years since the 1975 Emergency. The Cabinet observed two minutes of silence to honour citizens who bravely stood against authoritarian rule.

These individuals faced arrests, torture, and censorship but refused to surrender their democratic rights.

Remembering the Darkest Chapter

The Emergency, declared on June 25, 1975, shook the foundations of India’s democracy. For 21 months:

  • People lost their fundamental rights

  • The press remained censored

  • Courts faced political pressure

  • Activists and leaders were jailed without trial

The Cabinet called this period “Samvidhan Hatya Diwas”—a time when the spirit of the Constitution was crushed.

Resistance That Changed India

Despite the clampdown, lakhs of Indians chose to resist. They came from all walks of life—students, lawyers, political workers, writers, and ordinary citizens.

Movements like the Navnirman Andolan in Gujarat and the Sampoorna Kranti Abhiyan in Bihar, led by Jayaprakash Narayan, had already stirred the nation before the Emergency was imposed. These movements inspired many to fight for freedom.

Cabinet’s Message to the Nation

The resolution urged every citizen to:

  • Protect constitutional values

  • Defend free speech and liberty

  • Reject authoritarianism

The Cabinet also said that India’s youth must learn from history. Those who resisted the Emergency taught the nation that democracy is worth defending—even in the face of fear.

India: The Mother of Democracy

The resolution declared India as the “Mother of Democracy”. It reminded people that our Constitution is the soul of our Republic. When governments overstep, it is the people who must rise.

Call for Public Awareness

To ensure that future generations remember this history, the government plans to:

  • Promote awareness campaigns

  • Organize discussions and exhibitions

  • Include Emergency-era content in education

These efforts will help build democratic values from the ground up.

Moving Ahead, Together

As India reflects on the Emergency’s 50th year, the Cabinet’s message is clear:

“Let us unite to preserve the freedoms we inherited through struggle and sacrifice.”

India stands today as a beacon of democratic strength. However, its foundation depends on an alert and informed public.
