CBSE Introduces Two-Term Board Exams from 2026

RR Team, June 26, 2025June 26, 2025

In a significant step toward reducing student stress and promoting continuous learning, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has introduced a two-term board exam format for Class 10 students, beginning in the academic year 2026.

What’s New in the Exam Format?

Starting in 2026, students will face two board examinations. This change aims to distribute the academic pressure more evenly across the year.

  • First Term: Scheduled for February
  • Second Term: Will take place in May
  • CBSE will consider the higher score between the two for the final result
  • Results: Will be declared by early June
  • Students must attend the February exam to qualify for the May session

Why Did CBSE Make This Change?

After receiving feedback from parents, educators, and policymakers, CBSE decided to introduce this student-friendly format. The single-exam system had created intense pressure on students. By spreading the assessment over two terms, students now have more flexibility and a second opportunity to improve.

“This student-centric approach balances academic rigor with mental well-being,” said a senior CBSE official.

How This Aligns with NEP 2020

This new model supports the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The policy encourages flexible learning, reduces rote-based assessments, and focuses on conceptual clarity. Moreover, experts believe that identifying academic gaps earlier can lead to better interventions.

Key benefits include:

  • Better identification of individual learning gaps
  • Reduced pressure from a single high-stakes exam
  • More time for concept reinforcement and revision

Implications for Schools and Students

As this shift takes place, schools will need to adjust their academic calendars. Teachers will have to structure lessons and revisions to fit this dual-exam system. Meanwhile, students must prepare for both exams seriously, since either score can count toward the final result.

Additionally, this approach may increase classroom engagement and reduce test anxiety, as students know they’ll get another opportunity.

Conclusion

The CBSE’s two-term exam reform marks a major step forward in student assessment. Not only does it promote mental wellness, but it also empowers students to take greater control of their academic journey. With reduced stress and increased opportunities, learners will now have a more balanced and effective evaluation system.
