Viksit Krishi Abhiyan: Real Change for Farmers

RR Team, June 28, 2025June 27, 2025

A Mission Beyond Formalities

Union Agriculture Minister Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan made it clear that the Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan is not just another ritualistic initiative. It is a science-backed movement to uplift farmers’ lives. At a recent review meeting with scientists of the Indian Institute of Vegetable Research (IIVR) in Varanasi, the minister highlighted the vital role of research and innovation in transforming agriculture.

Empowering Farmers Through Science

The minister praised the national reach of the Abhiyan and emphasized the need to take high-quality, nutrient-rich food production to every corner of the country. He laid special emphasis on:

  • Genome editing to improve crop traits
  • Seed treatment for better germination and protection
  • Natural and organic farming to ensure sustainability
  • Developing vegetable varieties with longer shelf life
  • Creating export-ready crops for powder and processed forms

Fighting Fake Inputs, Supporting Real Farmers

Shri Chouhan raised serious concerns about the rise in fake fertilizers, substandard seeds, and harmful pesticides. He called for a strong action plan to protect farmers and ensure quality agricultural inputs reach them on time.

He also praised the “Lab to Land” model, encouraging scientists to base their research on ground realities and local needs. This approach ensures that innovations are practical, scalable, and accessible.

Farmers as Innovators

The minister urged institutions to promote farm-level innovation. He said farmers are not just consumers of technology but are often its creators. Supporting their ideas and connecting them with research bodies can fast-track rural transformation.

Strengthening Institutional Coordination

To maximize the campaign’s impact, Shri Chouhan stressed better coordination among:

  • Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs)
  • State agriculture departments
  • Research institutes and universities

He asked institutions to work together under a unified vision to ensure research translates into results for small and marginal farmers.

Call to Action

The Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan represents a much-needed shift in India’s agricultural policy—from top-down schemes to ground-up solutions. By integrating farmer wisdom with modern science, the Abhiyan can drive inclusive growth, improve rural incomes, and boost food security.
