In a vibrant display of national unity and fitness, Union Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya led the 29th edition of Fit India Sundays on Cycle in Palitana, Gujarat. The event saw active participation from more than 6,000 locations across India, with sanitation workers, urban ministry officials, local municipal staff, and youth volunteers turning up in large numbers to promote a healthier lifestyle.
Turning a Campaign into a Mass Movement
Speaking at the event, Dr. Mandaviya emphasized that the Fit India Sundays campaign is evolving into a true people’s movement. “We must make cycling the new trend for this generation,” he said. The campaign, which began in December 2024, is part of the wider Fit India Movement launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2019.
Palitana, the Minister’s hometown, became the epicenter of this week’s celebrations. Numerous cycling clubs from Bhavnagar district also participated. The focus this time was on ‘Swachhata Senanis’—frontline cleanliness workers who symbolically led the charge for a cleaner and fitter India.
Capital Joins with Enthusiasm
In Delhi’s Connaught Place, nearly 1,000 cyclists gathered, led by Padma Shri awardee Babita Phogat. She praised the initiative’s impact, stating, “It’s more than just fitness. It creates mental satisfaction and a sense of community.”
Beyond cycling, the event also included Zumba sessions, rope skipping, yoga, folk dances, and street plays. These added a festive atmosphere and attracted a wider audience, especially families and youth.
Nationwide Momentum Grows
According to the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, over 11,000 such events have been held so far, with participation from more than 4 lakh people across India. Over 2,000 Cycling Clubs and organizations such as MY Bharat, NSS, and NYKS are actively involved.
The drives are also supported by institutions like Khelo India Centres (KICs), State Centres of Excellence (KISCEs), SAI Training Centres, and National Centres of Excellence (NCOEs), making the initiative deeply integrated into India’s grassroots sports framework.
Cleanliness and Fitness Go Hand in Hand
Dr. Mandaviya’s message was clear: cleanliness and fitness are twin pillars of a developed India or ‘Viksit Bharat’. The presence of municipal workers and sanitation staff at the forefront of the campaign was symbolic of this alignment.
The event received a special mention in PM Modi’s ‘Mann Ki Baat’, further underlining its national significance. As citizens, leaders, and frontline workers all take part, Sundays on Cycle is not just about pedaling—it’s about propelling a healthier, cleaner future.
With each edition, Fit India Sundays on Cycle continues to build a community committed to wellness, cleanliness, and national unity—proving once again that even small acts like riding a bicycle can create large-scale social change.
