Tension has been increasing between West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Congress for the last few months. Mamata had campaigned for a united TMC-led opposition in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. At the same time, Congress had tried to form a separate opposition alliance challenging Mamata’s leadership.
Amidst this tension, senior Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge spoke to Mamata Banerjee on Friday. This conversation is being seen as a positive initiative to reduce the growing tension between TMC and Congress.
Kharge said he has told Mamata that Congress wants to form a strong opposition in the 2024 elections and for this, all opposition parties need to come together. He told Mamata that Congress was ready to make an honourable agreement with her.
Mamata also listened to Kharge and told him that she also wanted to form a strong opposition in the elections. He said Congress should reach an agreement with TMC that is acceptable to all parties.
The talks between the two leaders have been positive and it is believed that this can help in reducing the tension between TMC and Congress. However, it is still not clear whether both parties will contest the elections together or not. The final decision on this will be taken by the leadership of both parties.
