NHRC Concludes Summer Internship with Human Touch

RR Team, July 12, 2025July 11, 2025

New Delhi, July 12, 2025: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India, successfully concluded its prestigious four-week Summer Internship Programme in New Delhi today. The programme saw participation from 80 carefully selected students representing universities across India. These budding human rights advocates were immersed in real-world exposure to human rights advocacy, ethics, and institutional operations.

Leadership Speaks: Compassion Over Competition

At the valedictory session, NHRC Chairperson Justice V. Ramasubramanian delivered a heartfelt address. He urged students to place human connection and kindness above material ambitions. Justice Ramasubramanian described the bonds formed among students from diverse cultures as the “true wealth” of the internship.

“True success is measured not in material gain, but in how deeply we touch the lives of others,” he emphasized, encouraging students to evolve daily as better human beings who serve society with both skills and compassion.

Ethics at the Core of Action

Earlier in the session, NHRC Secretary General Shri Bharat Lal congratulated the interns. He highlighted the need to maintain integrity and good intent in every action. Bharat Lal also noted that every ethical choice, even small, has a lasting societal impact. “In moments of confusion, reflect on your core values. That is the way forward,” he said.

Internship Highlights and Competitions

Ms. Saidingpuii Chhakchhuak, Joint Secretary, presented the internship report and announced the winners of various competitions, including:

  • Book Review Contest
  • Group Research Project Presentation
  • Declamation Competition

The ceremony concluded with a vote of thanks by Lt. Col. Virender Singh, Director, NHRC, in the presence of senior officers such as Shri R.P. Meena (DG, Investigation), Shri Joginder Singh (Registrar, Law), and Shri Samir Kumar (Joint Secretary).

Learning from the Field and Experts

Throughout the internship, students participated in expert-led sessions involving NHRC Members, retired Union Secretaries, legal experts, civil society leaders, and government officials. These interactive discussions offered a deep dive into the NHRC’s work and challenges in tackling human rights violations.

Field visits were a major highlight, giving students real-world insights into institutional functioning. Places visited included:

  • Tihar Jail
  • SHEOWS NGO (Serving Helpless Elderly)
  • National Commission for Women
  • National Green Tribunal

These experiences helped interns understand the practical challenges of human rights enforcement and rehabilitation.

Inspiring Future Human Rights Champions

The NHRC Summer Internship Programme has been a transformative experience for students, shaping their perspectives and strengthening their resolve to contribute to a more compassionate, ethical, and inclusive India. The Commission’s commitment to building future leaders grounded in human rights is a testament to its proactive approach in advocacy and education.
