Apple is stepping up its India game. Foxconn has started importing key iPhone 17 components from China to India, marking the start of trial production for the iPhone 17 series. This move signals Apple’s growing intent to make India a vital hub for its global supply chain.
Foxconn Ships iPhone 17 Parts to India
According to The Economic Times, the imported components include display assemblies, cover glass, mechanical housings, and rear camera modules. These shipments began in June 2025. Trial runs are already underway.
Full-scale iPhone 17 production in India is expected to begin by August, aligning with Apple’s traditional September product launch window.
India Joins Apple’s New Product Introduction Process
This isn’t Apple’s first trial run in India. The country entered the New Product Introduction (NPI) process last year for base iPhone 16 models. However, with the iPhone 17, Apple is going further.
Even the iPhone 17 Pro models will be assembled in India, marking the end of China’s long-held exclusivity on initial model assembly.
Tata Electronics Also Involved
Tata Electronics is playing a major role. It is currently engaged in trial production of casings for the iPhone 17. The collaboration strengthens India’s role across Apple’s entire production ecosystem, not just final assembly.
India’s iPhone Exports Are Soaring
The decision to scale up in India isn’t surprising. Apple’s iPhone exports to the U.S. from India surged by 219% in March 2025, according to S&P Global Market Intelligence. Apple wants to fully shift U.S.-bound production out of China and into India by 2026.
This move aligns with broader geopolitical trends and Washington’s push for tech companies to reduce dependence on Chinese manufacturing.
Component Shipments Tell the Story
In June, about 10% of Foxconn’s total shipments from China to India were iPhone 17 components. The rest supported ongoing iPhone 14 and iPhone 16 production. These models will likely see strong sales during the Indian festive season.
Labour Challenges at the Foxconn Plant
However, Apple’s expansion isn’t without hiccups. Foxconn’s Indian facility is facing a talent crunch after many Chinese engineers returned home. This could pose challenges in scaling iPhone 17 production on time.
Apple has activated contingency plans. It is now pulling engineers from other global teams to keep operations on track.
What This Means for “Make in India”
The Indian government is closely monitoring the situation. While officials aren’t alarmed yet, prolonged labour shortages could disrupt Apple’s plans. Still, the momentum is clear—India is becoming central to Apple’s manufacturing strategy.
This development is also a big win for the “Make in India” initiative, which encourages global companies to manufacture locally and create employment.
Apple’s India Bet Is Paying Off
With Foxconn, Tata Electronics, and the government working in sync, India is now at the center of Apple’s future. The trial production of iPhone 17 shows how far the country has come in just a few years.
From assembling older models to leading new product development, India is now a global manufacturing powerhouse for the world’s most valuable tech company.
