India Strengthens Textile Ties with Japan

RR Team, July 17, 2025July 16, 2025
On July 16, 2025, Union Minister of Textiles Shri Giriraj Singh inaugurated the 16th India Trend Fair 2025 in Tokyo. The event marked a major step toward expanding India’s footprint in the global textile market.

India Trend Fair 2025: Connecting Exporters and Buyers

Hosted in Tokyo, the India Trend Fair is one of the largest platforms for Indian textile exporters to connect directly with Japanese buyers.

With over 100 leading Indian textile companies showcasing their work, the fair offers an unparalleled opportunity to foster trade, trust, and collaboration.

The fair aims to strengthen India-Japan textile trade and position India as a global hub for quality textile products.

Meetings with Japanese Industry Giants

On the sidelines of the event, Shri Giriraj Singh held a series of high-level meetings with top Japanese firms. These included:

YKK Corporation

The world’s largest zipper and fastening company, YKK Corporation, already operates in Haryana. The company expressed interest in expanding to other Indian states.

The Minister invited YKK to invest in the government’s PM MITRA Parks, a flagship initiative to boost textile manufacturing infrastructure. YKK welcomed the proposal and responded positively.

Workman Co.

Shri Singh also met with the President of Workman Co., a leading brand in workwear and functional apparel in Japan.

The Minister highlighted India’s evolving textile ecosystem and growing manufacturing capacities. Workman Co. showed keen interest in setting up units in India under the PM MITRA framework.

Konica Minolta

In a discussion with Konica Minolta, a major global player in digital and industrial printing, the Minister stressed the need for sustainable production practices.

Konica Minolta welcomed the idea of expanding their India operations and contributing to India’s ESG and sustainability goals.

Asahi Kasei Corporation

The Minister held a crucial meeting with Asahi Kasei Corporation, a $20 billion conglomerate engaged in specialty fibres and industrial textiles.

Asahi Kasei expressed strong interest in investing under the ‘Make in India for the World’ initiative. The company recognized India’s potential as a manufacturing base for global exports.

Roadshow at the Indian Embassy in Tokyo

The day concluded with an industry roadshow and interactive session at the Indian Embassy in Tokyo. The event saw participation from over 100 industry leaders and policy makers.

Ambassador Shri Sibi George and other senior officials from the Ministry of Textiles joined the discussions.

Shri Giriraj Singh showcased India’s textile achievements and invited more Japanese companies to become a part of India’s textile growth story.

India–Japan Textile Synergy

India and Japan share deep economic and cultural ties. In recent years, textiles have emerged as a strong pillar of bilateral trade.

India offers an unmatched blend of scale, skill, sustainability, and supply chain resilience. With schemes like PM MITRA and Production Linked Incentives (PLI), the sector is now primed for global partnerships.

The 16th India Trend Fair highlighted this synergy, bridging tradition with technology and East with South Asia.

PM MITRA: Transforming India’s Textile Landscape

The PM MITRA Parks initiative aims to build seven integrated textile parks across India. These parks will provide modern infrastructure, reduce logistics costs, and support end-to-end value chains.

It’s a part of India’s commitment to turn into a textile powerhouse and generate over 20 lakh direct and indirect jobs.

Japan’s investment in these parks will bring in advanced technology, enhance productivity, and create long-term bilateral value.

Why This Visit Matters

This engagement reflects India’s renewed push to position its textile industry on the global stage.

Japanese companies are known for innovation and quality. By inviting them into India’s textile sector, Shri Giriraj Singh is accelerating growth and future-proofing the industry.

More importantly, these partnerships are rooted in shared values—craftsmanship, sustainability, and mutual respect.

Looking Ahead

The India Trend Fair 2025 is just the beginning. As Indian manufacturers adopt global standards, and Japanese firms explore new partnerships, the textile sector is set for a vibrant transformation.

With government support, industry participation, and global collaboration, India is well on its way to becoming the world’s most trusted textile hub.
