Malé, July 25, 2025 — Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his two-day visit to the Maldives, described the India-Maldives relationship as “as old as history and as deep as the ocean.” The visit marks the celebration of 60 years of diplomatic relations between the two nations, setting the stage for deeper cooperation in defence, trade, and regional security.
Neighbourhood First: Maldives at the Heart of India’s Policy
Speaking at a joint press conference with Maldivian President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, PM Modi reiterated India’s commitment to its “Neighbourhood First” policy and Vision MAHASAGAR. He called the Maldives India’s closest maritime neighbour and a key partner in regional stability.
“India is the Maldives’ closest neighbour. The Maldives holds an important place in both India’s Neighbourhood First policy and Vision MAHASAGAR,” said Modi. “We are proud to be the Maldives’ most trusted friend.”
Historic Bonds Celebrated with Symbolism
To honour the six-decade-long friendship, both nations unveiled a commemorative postal stamp featuring traditional watercraft from India and the Maldives. “It reflects that we are not just neighbours but fellow travellers,” Modi said, highlighting the shared culture and deep-rooted maritime ties.
Strengthening Defence Partnership with $565M Support
In a major move to boost security ties, India announced a $565 million line of credit to the Maldives. Modi assured continued support to enhance the country’s defence capabilities.
“India will always support the Maldives to strengthen its defence capabilities,” Modi stated. “Our growing security cooperation reflects the depth of our mutual trust.”
Over the past few years, India has supplied patrol vessels, surveillance systems, and helped establish a coastal radar chain in the Maldives, enhancing maritime security in the Indian Ocean Region.
Trade and Economic Talks in Motion
Modi also announced the beginning of talks on a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between India and the Maldives. “Our discussions today included steps to expand economic ties and we’ve agreed to begin talks on a free trade agreement,” he said.
Additionally, both leaders agreed to work towards a bilateral investment treaty aimed at promoting private sector partnerships and infrastructure development in the Maldives.
Diplomatic Reset with President Muizzu
This visit holds special significance as it comes after initial tensions following President Muizzu’s 2023 election campaign, which ran on the ‘India Out’ slogan. Since taking office, Muizzu has shown signs of recalibrating foreign policy towards a balanced approach with India.
PM Modi’s warm reception and high-level dialogue suggest a strong push to reset bilateral ties with mutual respect and strategic cooperation at the core.
Looking Ahead: Shared Maritime Future
India’s Vision MAHASAGAR—focused on Maritime Security and Growth for All in the Region—aligns closely with Maldives’ interests. The collaboration ensures stability in a region challenged by rising sea levels, economic vulnerabilities, and geopolitical rivalries.
“Our friendship is based on mutual trust and shared goals. Our future cooperation will be as bright and clear as our oceans,” Modi said in conclusion.
