Shravan Purnima 2025: Date, Rituals & Significance

RR Team, August 9, 2025August 9, 2025

Shravan Purnima 2025: Date, Rituals & Significance

Shravan Purnima 2025 is one of the most auspicious days in the Hindu lunar calendar. It marks the end of the holy month of Shravan, a period dedicated to Lord Shiva, and also honors Lord Vishnu and the Moon God. This year, Shravan Purnima will be observed on August 9, 2025.

Date and Timings

  • Purnima Tithi Begins: August 8, 2025 – 02:12 PM
  • Purnima Tithi Ends: August 9, 2025 – 01:24 PM
  • Moonrise on Purnima Day: August 9, 2025 – 07:21 PM

Spiritual Significance of Shravan Purnima

In Hindu tradition, Shravan is the month of devotion and fasting for Lord Shiva. Purnima, the full moon day, is considered sacred for worshipping Lord Vishnu. When both coincide, the day is believed to be spiritually powerful.

According to scriptures, the divine rays of the full moon are at their strongest on Purnima, blessing devotees with positive energy and spiritual growth. People observe fasts, perform puja, chant mantras, and take holy dips in sacred rivers, especially the Ganga.

Traditional Puja Rituals

  • Early Morning Bath: Wake up before sunrise, take a bath with water mixed with Gangajal for purification.
  • Deity Bathing: Perform abhishekam of Lord Vishnu, Krishna, and Laddoo Gopal with Panchamrit (milk, curd, honey, sugar, and ghee).
  • Lighting a Diya: Light an earthen lamp with cow ghee and incense sticks in front of the deity.
  • Offerings: Present Tulsi leaves, flowers, Akshat (rice), and Panchamrit to the deity.
  • Mantra Chanting: Recite Vishnu Sahasranama, Shree Hari Stotram, and Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra.
  • Katha Reading: Read or listen to Satyanarayan Katha with devotion.
  • Offering Arghya: Offer water to the Moon God before breaking the fast.
  • Temple Visit: Worship Lord Shiva by performing abhishekam of the Shivalinga.

Special Fasting Guidelines

On this day, devotees fast from morning till evening. The fast is broken after sunset, post offering arghya to the Moon. Only sattvik meals are consumed, avoiding onion, garlic, and non-vegetarian food.

Connection with Lord Shiva

As Shravan month ends with this Purnima, devotees also offer special prayers to Lord Shiva. Ingredients like milk, curd, honey, sugar, and ghee are used for the abhishekam. Chanting the Panchakshari Mantra — Om Namah Shivaya — is considered highly auspicious.

Benefits of Observing Shravan Purnima

  • Brings spiritual peace and removes negative energy.
  • Enhances prosperity and family harmony.
  • Fulfills wishes when performed with faith and dedication.
  • Improves health and emotional balance through fasting and meditation.

Mantras for the Day

  • Om Namah Shivaya
  • Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya
  • Hare Ram Hare Ram Ram Ram Hare Hare, Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
  • Om Trayambakam Yajamahe Sugandhim Pushtivardhanam Urvarukamiva Bandhanan Mrityor Mukshiya Maamritat

Devotees believe that the energy of the full moon enhances manifestation power. To manifest, sit under the moonlight, light a diya, and write down your desires. Meditate, focus on positive energy, and pray for your goals, happiness, and well-being.
