The DPI includes key components such as AgriStack, the Krishi Decision Support System (Krishi-DSS), and a comprehensive Soil Fertility & Profile Map. Together, these tools form the foundation of an innovative digital ecosystem aimed at improving productivity and sustainability in Indian farming.
AgriStack: Creating Foundational Databases
AgriStack consists of three critical registries maintained by state governments and union territories: Geo-Referenced Village Maps, Crop Sown Registry, and Farmers Registry. The Farmers Registry contains detailed data about farmer demographics, landholdings, and crops cultivated, enabling digital identification and authentication for benefits such as credit, insurance, and procurement.
With this system, farmers can confidently access digital marketplaces to buy inputs and sell produce, while governments can design better farmer-centric policies and services.
Krishi Decision Support System: Data-Driven Farming
Krishi-DSS integrates diverse data sources including satellite imagery, weather patterns, soil types, crop health, reservoir and groundwater levels, and government schemes. This integration provides actionable tools such as crop and soil maps, automated yield predictions, and drought or flood monitoring systems.
These data-driven insights support informed decision-making for farmers, policymakers, and agri-tech innovators, paving the way for smarter, more resilient agriculture.
Soil Resource Mapping: Towards Sustainable Agriculture
The Soil and Land Use Survey of India (SLUSI) has launched a nationwide soil inventory project at the village level, using high-resolution satellite and ground data at a 1:10,000 scale. This soil mapping aids in rational land use and precise crop planning to promote sustainable agricultural practices across the country.
Per Drop More Crop: Enhancing Water Efficiency
The mission also complements ongoing efforts like the Centrally Sponsored Scheme “Per Drop More Crop” (PDMC), implemented since 2015-16. PDMC promotes micro-irrigation techniques, such as drip and sprinkler systems, to enhance water use efficiency, reduce fertilizer use, and increase farmer income.
Financial assistance under PDMC covers 55% of costs for small and marginal farmers and 45% for others. Additionally, state governments may provide top-up subsidies. The subsidy is limited to 5 hectares per beneficiary, encouraging efficient and sustainable irrigation practices.
