J&K Cloudburst: 46 Dead, 100+ Injured in Kishtwar

RR Team, August 15, 2025August 15, 2025
Kishtwar, Jammu & Kashmir: A devastating cloudburst in Chositi village, Kishtwar district, claimed at least 46 lives on Thursday afternoon. Most of the victims were pilgrims on the Machail Mata Yatra route. Over 100 people sustained injuries, and several remain missing as rescue operations continue amid relentless rain.

The Tragedy Strikes During Pilgrimage

The disaster unfolded between 12 and 1 pm, at the last motorable point to the 9,500-feet-high Machail Mata temple. Hundreds of devotees had gathered for the annual yatra when flash floods swept through the area. A community kitchen, or langar, set up for pilgrims, bore the brunt of the sudden deluge.

According to Deputy Commissioner Pankaj Kumar Sharma, 65 people were rescued, but the toll may rise. BS Tuti, Inspector General of Police (Jammu), confirmed that many of the deceased were devotees. Search and rescue teams are battling harsh terrain, debris, and continuous rainfall.

Security Forces Among Victims

The body of one Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) officer was recovered, while three others remain missing. They were deployed for temporary internal security during the pilgrimage.

Leaders Respond to the Disaster

Union Minister Jitendra Singh said he immediately contacted the district administration after being alerted by local MLA Sunil Kumar Sharma. “Massive cloudburst in Chositi area, which could result in substantial casualty. Rescue teams have been rushed to the site,” Singh posted on X.

J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said he had briefed Union Home Minister Amit Shah. “The news is grim & accurate. All possible resources are being mobilised for rescue operations,” he posted.

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha expressed anguish and directed the civil administration, police, army, NDRF, and SDRF to strengthen rescue and relief efforts. He assured all possible assistance to the victims and their families.

Monsoon Fury Across Northern India

This tragedy comes amid widespread monsoon damage in hilly regions. Cloudbursts and flash floods have hit Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, blocking roads, damaging homes, and isolating villages.

In Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district, a landslide blocked roads in Nandprayag, though officials have cleared other major routes. The bridge connecting Uttarkashi to Harsil was recently rebuilt after a cloudburst in early August swept away homes and infrastructure in Dharali and Harsil.

In Himachal Pradesh, heavy rainfall has closed 396 roads, damaged houses, and disrupted normal life in districts like Shimla, Kullu, and Kinnaur. The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for more heavy rain until August 20.

Eyewitness Accounts and On-Ground Reality

Survivors described how the peaceful gathering at the langar turned chaotic in seconds as a torrent of water and debris surged through. “We had no time to run; people were swept away in front of our eyes,” said a rescued pilgrim.

Rescue teams from the Army, NDRF, SDRF, and local volunteers are working around the clock. However, blocked paths, muddy terrain, and ongoing rainfall are slowing progress.

Authorities Urge Caution

Officials have urged people to avoid unnecessary travel to high-altitude regions until weather conditions improve. The administration is setting up temporary shelters, providing medical care, and coordinating with NGOs for relief supplies.

Key Points

  • 46 dead, 100+ injured after cloudburst in Chositi, Kishtwar.
  • Most victims were pilgrims on Machail Mata Yatra.
  • Rescue hampered by heavy rain and debris-filled terrain.
  • Security personnel among the dead and missing.
  • Leaders including Jitendra Singh, Omar Abdullah, and Manoj Sinha monitoring situation.
  • Monsoon rains wreaking havoc across Himachal and Uttarakhand as well.

Looking Ahead

The Jammu & Kashmir administration has promised full support for families of victims. Relief packages, medical aid, and rehabilitation measures are being planned. As the monsoon continues, authorities are on high alert for further cloudbursts or flash floods in vulnerable areas.
