RR Team, August 28, 2025August 28, 2025
India and Bhutan have strengthened their agricultural partnership with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on technical cooperation in agriculture and allied sectors. The MoU was signed in Thimphu by Shri Devesh Chaturvedi, Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Government of India, and Mr. Thinley Namgyel, Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, Royal Government of Bhutan, on August 28, 2025.

Framework for Collaboration

The MoU sets a framework for collaboration in areas including agricultural research and innovation, livestock health and production, post-harvest management, value chain development, and the exchange of knowledge, skills, and expertise. Both nations aim to enhance food security, promote sustainable farming, and support rural prosperity.

First Joint Technical Working Group Meeting

Following the signing, the first session of the Joint Technical Working Group (JTWG) was convened to discuss the Terms of Reference and priority areas for immediate action. The meeting focused on key sectors such as agriculture, livestock, agricultural marketing and cooperatives, food processing, seed sector, research and technology collaboration, and capacity building initiatives.

Key Highlights

Shri Chaturvedi highlighted India’s innovative initiatives, including the use of digital solutions, promotion of climate-resilient agricultural practices, risk mitigation, and providing farmers with credit support. Both sides emphasized the importance of continued collaboration and agreed to hold the next JTWG meeting in India at a mutually convenient date.

Strengthening Bilateral Ties

The MoU signing and JTWG meeting reinforce the longstanding friendship and cooperation between India and Bhutan. Regular exchanges and collaborative projects in agriculture demonstrate both nations’ commitment to shared prosperity and sustainable development in the region.
