PM Modi Hails Bihar as Men’s Hockey Asia Cup 2025 Kicks Off

RR Team, August 30, 2025August 30, 2025
The Men’s Hockey Asia Cup 2025 officially begins today, August 29, in Rajgir, Bihar, coinciding with National Sports Day and the birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand. Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his heartfelt wishes to all participating teams, players, officials, and fans across Asia ahead of the prestigious tournament.

In a post shared on social media, the Prime Minister highlighted hockey’s deep cultural and emotional connection with India. He expressed confidence that the tournament would feature thrilling contests and memorable moments that would inspire future generations of sports enthusiasts.

Bihar’s Rise as a Sporting Destination

Prime Minister Modi praised Bihar for emerging as a vibrant sporting hub. Over the past two years, the state has successfully hosted major tournaments, including the Khelo India Youth Games 2025, the Asia Rugby U20 Sevens Championship 2025, the ISTAF Sepaktakraw World Cup 2024, and the Women’s Asian Champions Trophy 2024. He noted that this momentum reflects Bihar’s investment in infrastructure and its growing enthusiasm for sports at the grassroots level.

Rajgir, a city known for its rich historical and cultural legacy, has now become the focal point of Asian hockey. Hosting the Asia Cup is expected to provide a significant boost to both local sports development and the regional economy.

National Sports Day and Hockey’s Legacy

The tournament’s opening on National Sports Day carries special significance. The day honors the memory of Major Dhyan Chand, widely regarded as one of the greatest hockey players in history. India’s hockey tradition is deeply intertwined with his legacy, and the Asia Cup in Rajgir serves as a fitting tribute.

Hockey has long been a source of national pride for India, with a decorated history at the Olympics and other international stages. The Men’s Asia Cup 2025 provides another opportunity for Indian players to showcase their talent against the continent’s best.

Global and Local Impact

The Asia Cup brings together top hockey teams from across Asia, strengthening the region’s sporting ties. For Bihar, the event not only highlights its capacity to host large-scale international competitions but also promotes tourism and cultural exchange.

With the participation of thousands of players, officials, and fans, Rajgir is expected to witness a surge in visitors. Local businesses, hospitality services, and cultural programs are also likely to benefit from the influx.

The tournament is more than just a sporting contest—it represents India’s growing commitment to positioning sports as a pillar of national development and international goodwill.
