Piyush Goyal Engages Exporters on Rising Global Tariffs

RR Team, September 4, 2025September 4, 2025
Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Shri Piyush Goyal convened a high-level meeting with Export Promotion Councils (EPCs) and industry associations to discuss emerging global tariff challenges and strategies to safeguard Indian trade interests. The session was attended by senior officials from the Department of Commerce, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), and representatives from key export sectors.

Addressing Global Tariff Challenges

The meeting was prompted by recent tariff hikes imposed on select Indian products in international markets. Exporters voiced concerns about declining competitiveness and sought targeted interventions to sustain their presence in key regions. Shri Goyal reassured industry leaders that the government is fully committed to mitigating the impact of these barriers through policy support and sustained engagement with trading partners.

Sector-Specific Concerns Raised

Industry representatives from textiles, apparel, engineering, gems and jewellery, leather, medical devices, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, and services highlighted sectoral challenges. They acknowledged the government’s proactive engagement and pledged to collaborate in enhancing India’s trade resilience.

Focus on Quality and Diversification

Shri Goyal urged exporters to upgrade product quality, adhere to international standards, and diversify supply chains. He also emphasized exploring new and alternative markets to reduce dependency on a limited set of countries. According to him, “Indian exporters must embrace innovation and competitiveness to strengthen our global position.”

Building Long-Term Trade Resilience

The Minister reiterated that strengthening domestic manufacturing and boosting exports remain core national priorities. He assured EPCs and industry associations that the government will continue supporting exporters through ease of doing business reforms, timely policy interventions, and sector-specific trade assistance. These steps, he noted, are vital for mitigating the risks posed by rising tariff measures.

Government and Industry Partnership

The discussions concluded with a broad consensus on enhancing cooperation between government and industry. Exporters expressed confidence in the government’s approach while emphasizing the need for continuous dialogue and monitoring of evolving global trade dynamics.
