Fulfilment Beyond Applause
The judge reflected on the isolating nature of the legal profession, describing it as adversarial at times. Yet, he argued that true satisfaction is not found in isolation but in connections. “Fulfilment in this profession is not found in isolation — it flourishes in community and connection,” he said.
To illustrate, Justice Kant likened life to a Grand Prix race, explaining that family and friends serve as a “pit crew,” offering strength during setbacks. “The laughter, comfort, and love waiting for you after a tough day in court gives you the strength to face whatever comes next. Never underestimate the value of that pit stop,” he noted.
Embracing Uncertainty in Career
Drawing from his own journey, Justice Kant spoke about the importance of embracing change. He recalled withdrawing from a judicial services interview on a senior judge’s advice and later pursuing a Master’s degree while serving on the Bench. These uncertain moments, he said, became turning points in his career.
“It was these uncertain moments — the ones faced with trepidation — that proved to be stepping stones. Had I not embraced those changes, I might not be standing before you today,” he told the students, encouraging them to remain flexible in shaping their careers.
He emphasised that growth in law and life rarely follows a straight path, urging students to permit themselves to adapt. “Permit yourself to evolve and adapt, for the simple reason that growth rarely proceeds in a straight line,” he said.
Law with Compassion
Justice Kant underscored that success in the legal profession should not be measured only in intellectual accomplishments. Compassion, kindness, and sustaining personal bonds, he said, were equally crucial. “Dare to be different. Dare to be kind. Dare to find happiness, both inside and outside your professional life,” he advised.
His message resonated strongly with the graduates, many of whom are entering a competitive field where long hours and professional demands can easily overshadow personal wellbeing. The judge’s words offered a reminder that professional milestones are best enjoyed when supported by meaningful human connections.
Justice Kant’s address comes at a time when mental health and work-life balance are pressing issues in the legal community, reflecting a wider recognition that emotional resilience is as vital as technical skill.
Building a Balanced Legal Career
Legal experts have often stressed the need for young professionals to maintain balance. Justice Kant’s emphasis on compassion and community aligns with the growing awareness of burnout risks in law.
As India produces more graduates from premier law schools, the call for integrating humanity with professional excellence is becoming louder. Justice Kant’s speech at DSNLU thus reinforced the timeless truth that while applause fades, relationships endure.
