Swacchotsav 2025: SHS Campaign to Promote Clean Festivities

RR Team, September 10, 2025September 10, 2025

New Delhi, 10 September 2025: The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) and the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation (DDWS) have announced the launch of the Swachhata Hi Seva (SHS) 2025 campaign, themed ‘Swacchotsav’. Scheduled from 17th September to 2nd October, the fortnight-long initiative aims to combine cleanliness drives with the Indian festive season, promoting clean and green celebrations nationwide.

The preparatory meeting, co-chaired by the Hon’ble Ministers of Housing and Urban Affairs and Jal Shakti, included participation from Ministers Incharge of Urban and Rural Sanitation from various States/UTs, senior officials, Secretaries, and Mission Directors. Discussions focused on planning, identifying Cleanliness Target Units (CTUs), addressing legacy waste dumpsites, and ensuring night-long cleanliness post-festivities.

Cleanliness as a Year-Round Commitment

Union Minister Shri Manohar Lal emphasized that Swachhata is a continuous effort, urging citizens across villages, cities, and peri-urban areas to maintain clean surroundings. He described Swachhata as a “shared dharma,” highlighting joint campaigns and visible cleanliness initiatives. Shri Lal also called upon all States to achieve 100% clearance of legacy dumpsites and encouraged active use of the Swachhata App for reporting and resolving sanitation issues efficiently.

Shri C.R. Patil, Minister of Jal Shakti, stated that guided by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision, SHS has evolved into a nationwide “jan andolan” promoting collective action. The ‘Swacchotsav’ theme integrates the festive season with citizen participation, emphasizing that cleanliness should be celebrated as a way of life. He further stressed that post-celebration cleanups should be conducted diligently to maintain a healthy and hygienic environment.

Engaging States and Urban-Rural Departments

The meeting also focused on reviewing the progress of CTUs identified in the previous year and mapping new units across urban and rural areas. Ministers and officials discussed strategies for SafaiMitra Suraksha Shivir, ensuring the safety and welfare of sanitation workers while promoting sustainable and community-driven sanitation practices.

MoS MoHUA Shri Tokhan Sahu, along with Secretaries from both MoHUA and DDWS, participated to coordinate with State officials, ensuring smooth implementation of SHS 2025 across India.
