India Hosts 89th IEC General Meeting in New Delhi

RR Team, September 15, 2025September 15, 2025
India has taken center stage in the global electrotechnical landscape as it hosts the 89th General Meeting of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) from September 15 to 19, 2025, at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi. The high-profile event, being held for the fourth time in India after 1960, 1997, and 2013, is drawing over 2,000 global experts and representatives from more than 100 countries.

Top Leaders to Inaugurate Key Sessions

The opening ceremony will be inaugurated by Shri Pralhad Joshi, Union Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution and Minister of New & Renewable Energy. Shri Piyush Goyal, Union Minister of Commerce & Industry, will inaugurate the IEC GM Exhibition, which promises to be the largest electrotechnical showcase ever held in India.

The exhibition, open to the public from September 16 to 19, will highlight innovations in electric mobility, smart lighting, IT manufacturing, and electronics. Entry is free with prior registration via the official IEC GM 2025 portal. Visitors may access the venue through Gate No. 10 and Gate No. 4 of Bharat Mandapam.

India as Global Secretariat for LVDC

India will serve as the Global Secretariat for Standardisation in Low Voltage Direct Current (LVDC), a crucial domain for clean and pollution-free energy solutions. According to Vimal Mahendru, Vice President of IEC, this move places India at the forefront of sustainable technology development. IEC membership spans nearly 170 countries, representing 99% of the global population and influencing almost 20% of global trade by value.

Workshops and Technical Sessions

More than 150 technical and management committee meetings will shape next-generation standards during the General Meeting. Alongside, a series of workshops will address pressing global challenges:

  • September 15: Fostering a Sustainable World
  • September 16: Artificial Intelligence: Shaping the Future with Innovation
  • September 17: Shaping the Future of E-Mobility
  • September 18: Building a More Inclusive World through Standards

James Wood, Director of Communications at IEC, described India as “a real sustainability champion,” noting widespread public support for clean and green initiatives.

Encouraging Young Professionals

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is focusing on engaging students and young professionals through structured internships and industry exposure. Under the IEC Young Professionals Programme, 93 participants from around the world will take part in workshops, boot camps, and industry visits to prepare them as future technology leaders.

Exhibition Highlights and Public Engagement

The IEC GM Exhibition, featuring 75 exhibitors, will showcase cutting-edge technologies and highlight how international standards guide product development. Over 2,000 students from schools and colleges are expected to attend.

In line with the event’s theme, “Fostering a Sustainable World,” the BIS pavilion will invite visitors to take a Digital Sustainability Pledge. For every pledge, BIS will plant a sapling across its offices in India, reinforcing its environmental commitment.

IEC’s Global Role

Founded in 1906, the International Electrotechnical Commission is the world’s leading body for creating international standards in electrical, electronic, and related technologies. Its network of 30,000 experts helps shape standards that impact industries worldwide and drive innovation for a connected, sustainable future.
