India’s Largest and Most Modern Sports Facility
Shri Amit Shah highlighted that the complex is the largest in India and ranks among the most modern sports complexes globally. Developed under the guidance of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, the facility reflects India’s ambition to be number one in all fields by 2047. Shah emphasized that sports are the soul of the nation and crucial for a young country like India to shine globally.
The Veer Savarkar Sports Complex offers world-class infrastructure, athlete training, transparent selection processes, and fair opportunities for players. It spans over 1.19 lakh square meters, featuring seven entry gates, parking for 900 vehicles, a 275-kilowatt solar power plant, and a 60 KLD sewage treatment facility, making it eco-friendly. The complex also houses a Fit India Zone, Outdoor Sports Zone, hostels, coach accommodations, medical and nutrition facilities, and a theater for performance analysis.
Historical Inspiration and Global Recognition
Named after freedom fighter Veer Savarkar, the complex commemorates his bravery, including the historic escape at Marseille port in France. Amit Shah noted that athletes training here will aim to bring glory to India globally, not just medals. Recently held international events in Ahmedabad confirmed the complex as one of the most advanced worldwide.
Transforming Indian Sports
Shri Shah credited Prime Minister Modi’s leadership for unprecedented reforms in Indian sports over the last decade. From a budget of ₹1,643 crore in 2014–15, India’s sports allocation increased to ₹5,300 crore, funding infrastructure, Khelo India centers, state excellence hubs, academies, and recovery facilities. Initiatives like Khelo India University Games, Para Games, Winter Games, and TOPS financial support have strengthened athlete performance.
Between 1948–2012, India won only 20 Olympic medals, but in the last eight years, it secured 15 medals. Paralympic achievements rose from 8 to 52 medals. The reforms fostered a strong sports culture nationwide.
Ahmedabad: India’s Future Sports Hub
With the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium and Sardar Patel Sports Complex, Ahmedabad is poised as a sports capital. The Veer Savarkar Sports Complex adds world-class facilities for training and international events. Upcoming plans include hosting the World Police and Fire Games in 2029, bids for the Commonwealth Games, and preparations for the Olympic Games in 2036. By 2036, 13 international tournaments are expected, establishing Ahmedabad as Asia’s sports hub.
