PM Modi, Speaker Om Birla Pay Tributes to Gandhi and Shastri

RR Team, October 2, 2025October 3, 2025
New Delhi, October 2: Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and Lok Sabha Speaker Shri Om Birla paid solemn tributes to Mahatma Gandhi and former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri on their birth anniversaries today. The ceremony took place at the Central Hall of the newly inaugurated Samvidhan Sadan, where floral tributes were offered at the portraits of the two national icons.

PM Modi and Leaders Join in Remembrance

Prime Minister Modi was joined by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Union Ministers Piyush Goyal, Kiren Rijiju, and Arjun Ram Meghwal, along with Members of Parliament and former MPs. The dignitaries gathered to honor the memories of Gandhi and Shastri, recalling their sacrifices and contributions to the nation’s freedom and development.

The ceremony underscored the continuing respect for leaders whose principles remain relevant for India’s governance and civic life.

Om Birla Pays Homage at Raj Ghat

Earlier in the day, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla visited Raj Ghat to pay homage at the Samadhi of Mahatma Gandhi. Reflecting on Gandhi’s life, he described it as “an immortal message for humanity,” highlighting Bapu’s emphasis on truth, non-violence, and moral courage.

“Mahatma Gandhi’s teachings are a living inspiration for social, political, and civic life,” Birla said, stressing their relevance in addressing challenges in contemporary society.

Tributes to Lal Bahadur Shastri

In his social media message, Shri Birla remembered former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri as a leader of “simplicity, purity, and unparalleled devotion to the nation.” He highlighted Shastri’s role in nation-building, from the freedom struggle to laying the foundations of food security and defense self-reliance.

“The nation will always remember Shastriji for his unwavering patriotism, strong determination, and simplicity,” Birla wrote, noting the enduring power of his slogan “Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan.”

Gandhi and Shastri: Enduring Legacies

Both Gandhi and Shastri remain moral compasses for India. While Gandhi’s philosophy of non-violence and Antyodaya shaped India’s independence movement and social justice efforts, Shastri’s leadership during the 1965 war and his call for strengthening farmers and soldiers continue to inspire generations.

On their joint birth anniversary, leaders across the political spectrum reaffirmed their commitment to uphold the values of simplicity, truth, selfless service, and nation-first spirit championed by these two icons.
