GPT-5: Revolution in AI or Just Overhyped?

RR Team, October 12, 2025October 12, 2025
New Delhi, October 12, 2025: OpenAI’s GPT-5 has reignited debate across technology and culture: is it a genuine technological leap or a well-crafted media spectacle? On The Hindu’s “In Focus” podcast (published October 12, 2025), digital anthropologist Payal Arora argued that beyond speed and slick demos, the real questions are who builds these systems, who benefits, and how concentrated power shapes the future of work, learning and civic life.

Beyond the Hype: Who Designs the Future?

Payal Arora told host Anupama Chandrasekaran that the technical leap often steals headlines while structural questions get sidelined. “It’s not just a model,” she said. “It’s an ecosystem — data sources, lab decisions, commercial incentives.” The podcast pushed listeners to consider the sociopolitical design choices behind GPT-5 and similar systems.

Arora highlighted that developers and funders influence not only capabilities but also the values encoded in models. This matters in India where language diversity, local knowledge and digital literacy vary widely; design choices made abroad can have outsized effects on how Indians use and trust AI tools.

Jobs, Education and Uneven Gains

One recurrent theme in the episode is disruption to work and learning. GPT-5’s improved fluency, research ability and multimodal features may boost productivity for some professionals. But Arora warned of uneven benefits: gig workers, contract educators, and small media teams could face displacement without policies to manage transitions.

She urged governments, universities and industry to treat AI as a socio-economic shift that requires labour safeguards, upskilling and public investment — not just tech evangelism. For context on national plans, India’s policy conversations on AI are evolving; readers can consult the Ministry of Electronics & IT or NITI Aayog for official frameworks and guidelines. Who Controls Knowledge and Narratives?

Arora focused on a less technical but crucial point: a small number of institutions now shape the narratives billions will consume. Improved models concentrate editorial power — deciding what counts as authoritative information, summaries or cultural interpretation. This centralisation can narrow debate and amplify certain worldviews.

She recommended democratic checks: transparent data provenance, independent audits, and community stewardship models that let diverse groups shape how models interact with local languages and facts.

Ethics, Regulation and Public Literacy

Ethical safeguards and regulation featured prominently in the discussion. Arora called for public-facing audits and standards that go beyond lab benchmarks. She also urged educational campaigns so users can distinguish what an AI suggests from expert judgement. That distinction, she argued, will preserve civic and professional norms in the age of machine-generated text and imagery.

Practical Takeaways for India

For Indian policymakers and organisations, the podcast offered concrete priorities: invest in multilingual datasets, support open research, fund reskilling initiatives, and craft regulation that balances innovation with safety. The goal should be to ensure AI augments public good rather than deepens inequalities.

Where the Conversation Goes Next

The episode ends not with a verdict but with a call to public conversation. GPT-5 may be technically impressive, but its societal footprint depends on human choices. Listeners are left with a clear message: the technology’s long-term value will be decided in civic spaces — classrooms, courts, parliaments and newsrooms — not just in tech demos.
