ANRF Launches Maha MedTech Mission to Boost India’s MedTech

RR Team, October 26, 2025October 25, 2025
The Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF), in collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the Gates Foundation, has launched the Maha MedTech Mission, a pioneering initiative to strengthen India’s medical technology ecosystem. The mission aims to accelerate innovation, reduce dependence on high-cost imports, and ensure equitable access to affordable, high-quality medical solutions.

Funding and Support for Innovation

The mission will provide milestone-linked funding ranging from ₹5–25 crore per project, with exceptional cases receiving up to ₹50 crore. Eligible applicants include academic and R&D institutions, hospitals, startups, MSMEs, and collaborations within the MedTech industry. This support is designed to help bring high-impact medical technologies from development to market.

In addition to financial backing, the mission offers enabling support through initiatives such as Patent Mitra for intellectual property protection, MedTech Mitra for regulatory guidance, a Clinical Trial Network for validation, and mentorship from industry experts.

Key Objectives of the Mission

  • Enhance public health by supporting technologies addressing priority disease areas.
  • Ensure affordability and accessibility, reducing healthcare costs for citizens.
  • Promote self-reliance and competitiveness by fostering indigenous MedTech development and industry–academia collaborations.

Scope and Focus Areas

The Maha MedTech Mission covers a broad range of medical devices and in-vitro diagnostics, including equipment, implants, surgical and assistive devices, consumables, and software-based solutions. Focus areas include advanced diagnostic imaging, minimally invasive technologies, point-of-care molecular diagnostics, AI/ML platforms, robotics, and other emerging technologies.

Projects aligned with national health priorities such as tuberculosis, cancer, neonatal care, and primary health care are especially encouraged.

Application Process and Timeline

The mission follows a two-stage application process. Concept notes are open from 15 September to 7 November 2025 and will be accepted via the ANRF portal (www.anrfonline.in). Shortlisted proposals will be invited to submit full applications in December 2025.

Boosting India’s MedTech Ecosystem

By providing both funding and strategic support, the mission aims to create a robust MedTech ecosystem capable of producing affordable, high-quality solutions domestically. The initiative is expected to drive innovation, foster industry–academia collaboration, and enhance India’s self-reliance in critical medical technologies.

The Maha MedTech Mission represents a significant step toward transforming India into a global hub for medical technology innovation, ensuring better healthcare outcomes for citizens nationwide.
