Shivraj Chouhan Thanks PM Modi for ₹38,000 Cr Fertiliser Aid

RR Team, October 29, 2025October 30, 2025
New Delhi, October 29, 2025: Union Agriculture, Farmers’ Welfare and Rural Development Minister Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for approving a ₹38,000 crore fertiliser subsidy aimed at easing the financial burden on farmers and ensuring affordable access to essential agricultural inputs across India.

Government’s Commitment to Farmers’ Welfare

The fertiliser subsidy approval follows a Cabinet decision chaired by Prime Minister Modi, reinforcing the government’s continued commitment to supporting India’s farmers. Shri Chouhan stated that the decision would ensure timely and affordable supply of fertilisers ahead of the upcoming Rabi season, helping sustain high productivity levels achieved during the Kharif 2025 season.

“On behalf of all farmers, I thank Prime Minister Modi for his unwavering commitment to agriculture. This subsidy demonstrates the government’s dedication to strengthening farmers’ livelihoods and national food security,” the Minister said.

Strong Kharif Performance Across Major Crops

During a detailed review of the agricultural sector, Shri Chouhan highlighted that the ongoing Kharif season has recorded highly satisfactory progress. Paddy sowing has covered 441.58 lakh hectares, exceeding last year’s figures. Oilseeds have been cultivated on 190.13 lakh hectares, led by soybean and groundnut crops, while pulses occupy 120.41 lakh hectares, marking a positive trend toward improved nutritional security.

The area under sugarcane stands at 59.07 lakh hectares, offering direct benefits to sugarcane farmers through better yields and stable prices. These outcomes collectively reflect the sector’s resilience and the success of ongoing policy measures.

Favourable Weather Boosts Agricultural Momentum

According to the Ministry’s review, India’s agriculture sector has benefited from a favourable monsoon, adequate rainfall, and improved reservoir levels. Union Minister Chouhan noted that most major reservoirs currently hold water at normal or above-normal levels, ensuring sufficient irrigation supply.

Consistent soil moisture has supported steady crop growth, while enhanced irrigation facilities are expected to enable expanded Rabi sowing. The live water storage in 161 reservoirs stands at 165.58 billion cubic metres—about 104% of last year’s levels and 116% of the ten-year average signaling a promising outlook for the coming season.

Harvest and Food Stock Updates

The harvesting of Kharif crops has begun in several regions, covering nearly 27% of the total cultivated area so far. Early indicators suggest stable yields and healthy crop conditions. Key vegetables such as onion, potato, and tomato are reported to be in satisfactory condition nationwide.

The government also confirmed that national food stocks, including rice and wheat, are well above the buffer norms, ensuring food availability and price stability for the coming months.

Digital Innovation and Policy Support Driving Growth

Shri Chouhan emphasized that India’s agriculture sector is reaching new milestones due to timely rains, resource efficiency, and digital agricultural innovations. He added that the Central government, in coordination with states, will extend all possible support to enhance the productivity of pulses and oilseeds in the upcoming Rabi season.

“Our policies under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership are helping farmers grow with confidence. With technology, planning, and strong partnerships, we are building an Atmanirbhar agricultural economy,” Shri Chouhan said.
