AMRIT Pharmacy Turns 10; Nadda Unveils Expansion Plan

RR Team, November 16, 2025November 16, 2025
Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Shri J P Nadda inaugurated the 10th anniversary celebrations of AMRIT (Affordable Medicines and Reliable Implants for Treatment) Pharmacy at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi on Friday. The event marked a significant milestone in India’s ongoing efforts to make essential medicines more affordable and accessible to citizens.
The AMRIT initiative, launched in 2015, has become a major pillar in the country’s affordable healthcare ecosystem. Over the last decade, the network has grown to more than 255 outlets across India, serving crores of patients with discounted medicines and medical supplies. During the event, Shri Nadda announced a major expansion plan to increase the network to 500 pharmacies nationwide in the near future.

A Decade of Affordable Healthcare

Since its inception, AMRIT Pharmacy has provided life-saving and essential medicines at discounts ranging from 50% to 90%, significantly reducing treatment costs for economically vulnerable patients. According to official data, more than 6.85 crore patients have benefited from these outlets.

Medicines worth over ₹17,000 crore (MRP value) have been sold at subsidized rates through the network, translating to patient savings of nearly ₹8,400 crore. Shri Nadda described this achievement as “a testament to the government’s commitment to ensuring no citizen is denied treatment due to high medicine costs.”

Nadda Calls for AMRIT Pharmacies in Every District Hospital

In his keynote address, the Union Health Minister emphasized the need to expand AMRIT services to all levels of the healthcare system. While every AIIMS in the country hosts an AMRIT outlet, Shri Nadda stressed that the next goal is to ensure that every medical college and every district hospital in India is equipped with one.

He highlighted that the initiative was aligned with the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who aimed to make healthcare equitable and financially accessible for all citizens. Programmes like Jan Aushadhi and AMRIT, he said, have played a crucial role in breaking the cost barrier in healthcare delivery.

HLL Lifecare Commits to Strengthening the Network

HLL Lifecare Limited, the implementing agency of the AMRIT network, announced its commitment to doubling the number of outlets in the coming years. The organization underscored its focus on improving services, systems, and outreach to ensure that more citizens can benefit from affordable medicines.

Union Health Secretary Smt. Punya Salila Srivastava praised HLL for sustaining the programme with “Josh, Junoon and Jazbaat” energy, enthusiasm, and emotion. She reiterated that AMRIT remains central to the government’s mission to ensure equitable access to quality healthcare.

New Initiatives Launched: IT Platform, Mobile Pharmacy Van & 24×7 Helpline

During the event, several new initiatives were unveiled to enhance efficiency and citizen services. Shri Nadda inaugurated ten new AMRIT outlets across India, further strengthening the network’s national footprint.

He also launched AMRIT ITes – Eco Green Version 2.0, a digital platform designed to optimize operations, improve transparency, and make pharmacy services more environmentally sustainable. A customized My Stamp, released in collaboration with India Post, was also presented to commemorate the decade-long journey.

A Coffee Table Book documenting AMRIT’s milestones and impact was unveiled, providing insights into the initiative’s role in expanding healthcare affordability. Additionally, a Mobile Pharmacy Van dedicated to rural outreach in the NCR region was flagged off to deliver affordable medicines to underserved communities.

To enhance public accessibility, a 24×7 National Contact Centre was inaugurated, enabling citizens to obtain real-time information on medicine availability, pricing, and the nearest AMRIT outlet.

Background: HLL Lifecare’s Wider Healthcare Mission

HLL Lifecare Limited, a Mini Ratna PSU under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, plays a significant role in India’s healthcare supply chain. Its portfolio includes contraceptives, hospital products, medical devices, diagnostics (Hindlabs), retail initiatives like AMRIT and HLL Pharmacy, and major procurement services for states and central agencies.

With seven manufacturing facilities, five subsidiaries, and a dedicated R&D centre, HLL has been instrumental in developing affordable healthcare solutions for millions of Indians.
