Sanchar Saathi Helps Recover 50,000+ Phones in October, Boosts Digital Security

RR Team, November 21, 2025November 25, 2025
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) announced on November 25 that the Sanchar Saathi platform helped recover over 50,000 lost and stolen mobile handsets in October 2025 the highest monthly tally since the service’s launch. This milestone contributed to India crossing the larger benchmark of 7 lakh total handset recoveries, underscoring the growing impact of technology-driven policing and citizen-facing digital tools.

The spike in recoveries comes amid strengthened coordination between state and UT police forces, DoT’s Digital Intelligence Unit (DIU) and local Service Area (LSA) teams. Together, they have streamlined device-tracing workflows and improved response times for returning lost devices to their rightful owners.

State Leaders and Monthly Surge

Karnataka and Telangana led the recovery drive with each state reporting over 1 lakh recoveries to date, while Maharashtra reported more than 80,000 recoveries. Between June and October 2025, monthly recoveries rose by 47%, highlighting Sanchar Saathi’s expanding reach and effectiveness.

DoT officials noted a striking statistic: India is now recovering roughly one lost phone every minute using the platform a figure that reflects both the platform’s scale and the maturity of inter-agency processes.

How Sanchar Saathi Works

Sanchar Saathi is an indigenously developed platform that integrates automated workflows, real-time device traceability and stakeholder alerts. When a user reports a device as lost or stolen, the system blocks network access and logs the device details. If a blocked handset detects a SIM change, automated alerts are sent simultaneously to the device owner and the designated police station.

These alerts allow local law enforcement to act quickly, accelerating investigations and physical recoveries. The platform also prevents misuse by rendering blocked devices less valuable in the black market, thus deterring theft-driven resale.

Police–DoT Collaboration and Capacity Building

Officials attribute the recent gains to close cooperation between DoT and state police units. Regular capacity-building programmes have equipped law-and-order personnel with the skills to interpret Sanchar Saathi alerts and undertake targeted recovery operations.

DoT’s Digital Intelligence Unit and field formations (LSAs) continue to refine protocols and share best practices, while states have adopted quick-response measures tailored to their local contexts. The result: faster trace-to-recovery cycles and improved rates of device return.

Citizen Tools: Blocking, Verification and Fraud Reporting

DoT has urged citizens to download the Sanchar Saathi mobile app and use its multiple services: block lost or stolen handsets, verify IMEI details before purchase, and report suspected frauds. The app also helps users cross-check customer service numbers for banks and financial institutions, reducing the risk of falling victim to impersonation scams.

Official links for real-time statistics and downloads are available at the Sanchar Saathi portal: sancharsaathi.gov.in. The app is available on Android and iOS app stores for immediate use.

Impact on Digital Safety and Trust

The surge in recoveries not only returns property to citizens but also strengthens public trust in digital governance. By protecting digital assets and reducing incentives for device theft, Sanchar Saathi aligns with the Government’s broader Digital India vision  promoting secure, citizen-centric technology solutions.

Experts say the platform’s future roadmap includes enhanced data analytics, improved cross-border information sharing for transnational fraud, and closer integration with law enforcement databases to further reduce recovery times.

What Citizens Should Do Now

DoT recommends that smartphone users register their devices, routinely check IMEI authenticity before purchasing used phones, and immediately report a device as lost on Sanchar Saathi if needed. Prompt reporting increases the chance of recovery and enables authorities to take rapid action.
