Wayanad, February 22nd, 2024: Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Bhupender Yadav, made a somber visit to Wayanad today, offering condolences and promising action in the wake of recent deadly attacks by tigers and elephants.
Following his arrival from Bangalore, Mr. Yadav visited the homes of Prajeesh (killed by a tiger) and Paul & Ajeesh (killed by elephants), offering solace to their grieving families. He also engaged with local residents to understand their concerns and experiences with human-animal conflict.
Acknowledging the gravity of the situation, Mr. Yadav called human-animal conflict a “major problem” in the region. He pledged the government’s full support, both political and administrative, to officials and scientists working to find solutions. Emphasizing the urgency of action, he stated, “There must be a solution to this issue.”
Recognizing the cross-border nature of the problem, Mr. Yadav revealed ongoing discussions with officials from both Karnataka and Kerala. He further highlighted a planned meeting with local administration and NGOs on February 22nd, aiming to gather more information and develop informed strategies.
Echoing Prime Minister Modi’s vision, Mr. Yadav stressed the importance of both environmental protection and human safety. While expressing compassion for animals, he firmly stated, “human lives should be saved with the help of new technology.” This balanced approach offered hope for a sustainable solution that respects both wildlife and human communities.
