With the arrival of the sacred relics of Lord Buddha and his disciples, Arahata Sariputra and Arahata Maudgalyayana, in Thailand, a 26-day exposition unfolds, promising a unique cultural and spiritual experience. This momentous journey transcends borders, weaving together the threads of history, faith, and shared traditions between India and Thailand.
A diverse delegation accompanied the relics, led by Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar of Bihar and Union Minister Virendra Kumar. Venerable monks, representing the core of Buddhist tradition, travelled alongside officials, curators, artists, and scholars, symbolizing the confluence of spiritual wisdom and cultural heritage. The collaborative efforts of the Ministry of External Affairs, the Indian Embassy in Thailand, the International Buddhist Confederation, and local authorities ensured a smooth and respectful passage.
Upon landing at Bangkok Military Airport, the relics were received with a ceremony echoing their deep reverence. H.E. Mr. Sermsak Pongpanit, Minister of Culture of Thailand, along with dignitaries and a multitude of monks, participated in a traditional chanting ceremony and cultural performance. The warmth and respect displayed by the Thai people highlighted the shared connection and spiritual significance of the event.
Currently housed in the National Museum, Bangkok, the relics will soon be placed in a grand mandapam prepared at Sanam Luang Pavilion. This temporary shrine will become a focal point for devotion and reflection, particularly during the upcoming Makha Bucha Day, a Buddhist holiday commemorating Lord Buddha’s teachings. Devotees from all walks of life can pay their respects, immersing themselves in the peaceful aura emanating from the relics.
