The ancient wisdom of Ayurveda and Homoeopathy, cornerstones of India’s traditional medicine system, are experiencing a resurgence. Leading the charge is Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, who recently unveiled a transformative expansion plan for the North Eastern Institute of Ayurveda and Homoeopathy (NEIAH) in Shillong. This ambitious initiative, driven by the vision of “Heal in India, Healed by India,” promises to not only bolster healthcare access but also empower a new generation of Ayush practitioners.
The NEIAH expansion is a testament to the government’s commitment to elevating Ayush to the forefront of healthcare. A whopping ₹217 crore injection will see the institute blossom, equipped with a brand-new guest house, administrative building, pharmacy building, and a secure, well-connected campus. This infrastructure upgrade signifies a shift towards a premier Ayush institute, capable of attracting and training top talent.
The impact of past investments is already evident. NEIAH has nurtured nearly 1,000 Ayush practitioners, who are now serving as pillars of the healthcare system, particularly in Meghalaya. This translates to tangible improvements for local communities, aligning perfectly with Prime Minister Modi’s vision of a “Swastha Bharat.”
Minister Sonowal’s vision extends beyond the NEIAH walls. Recognizing the need for wider access, he announced the launch of peripheral OPD services in Smit, potentially serving 40,000 residents across 20 villages. This initiative bridges the geographical gap, ensuring that the benefits of Ayush medicine reach even the most remote corners, embodying the spirit of inclusivity.
The expansion masterfully blends ancient wisdom with modern advancements. Programs like Swarnabindu Prashan Sanskar leverage the power of Ayurveda to address iron deficiency anemia, while interventions like Panchakarma, Ksharasutra, Uttarabasti, and Yoga offer holistic solutions for improved well-being. This synergy ensures that traditional knowledge stays relevant, and enriched by contemporary scientific understanding.
By training more Ayush professionals, including specialized Panchakarma technicians, the NEIAH expansion aims to create an “Ayush army.” This growing workforce will make Ayush medicine more accessible, popular, and deeply integrated into India’s healthcare landscape. The vision extends beyond mere numbers; it seeks to empower individuals and communities with the knowledge and tools to prioritize their well-being.
This initiative transcends a mere press release. It marks a significant turning point in India’s healthcare journey. The government’s recognition of Ayush’s potential to address contemporary health challenges while respecting and revitalizing traditional practices sets a powerful precedent. By investing in capacity building and accessibility, the NEIAH expansion paves the way for a future where “Heal in India, Healed by India” becomes a tangible reality for all.
