Technical Talks Set the Stage for High-Level Engagement
The ministerial discussions followed a full week of technical negotiations held in New Delhi from 3–9 December 2025. These sessions covered critical chapters of the proposed India–EU FTA, including Market Access for Goods, Rules of Origin, Services, Technical Barriers to Trade, and Trade and Sustainable Development. The groundwork laid by these technical teams enabled a focused ministerial review aimed at accelerating the pace of the negotiations.
Prior to Commissioner Šefčovič’s visit, Commerce Secretary-level talks with the European Commission’s Director-General for Trade were held on 7 December 2025. These engagements highlighted a shared intention to deepen collaboration and push for a timely, mutually beneficial agreement.
Strategic Focus on a Balanced and Ambitious FTA
Minister Piyush Goyal and Commissioner Šefčovič held detailed discussions on the remaining areas of the FTA that require convergence. Both sides acknowledged the sustained progress made across negotiating tracks and emphasized the need to maintain momentum through continuous dialogue. They reiterated their commitment to securing an agreement that is fair, balanced, and reflective of shared economic and strategic priorities.
