600 SC Scholars Gain Overseas Scholarships in 5 Years

RR Team, December 11, 2025December 10, 2025
The Union Government has revealed that a total of 600 Scheduled Caste (SC) students have received support under the National Overseas Scholarship (NOS) scheme during the past five years, marking a significant push toward expanding global academic opportunities for marginalized communities. Out of the 600 beneficiaries, 133 are women, reflecting a substantial rise in representation and access to advanced education abroad.
The details were shared by Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment, Shri Ramdas Athawale, in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha. According to the Ministry, the NOS scheme remains one of the most impactful initiatives designed to empower SC students by enabling them to pursue postgraduate and doctoral degrees in international institutions.

Scheme Validity and Future Extension Under Review

The National Overseas Scholarship scheme was approved for implementation for the period 2021–22 to 2025–26. As the scheme approaches the end of its current approved cycle, the proposal for its continuation into the next financial phase is under active review and evaluation by the government.

Officials emphasize that the review process considers the scheme’s long-term impact, demand from eligible students, performance of beneficiaries abroad, and evolving global education trends. A decision on extension is expected to shape the next phase of opportunities available to aspirants from the Scheduled Caste category.

A Steady Rise in Overseas Academic Mobility

Over the years, the NOS scheme has emerged as a gateway for many students to access world-class education in countries including the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, Australia, and other leading academic destinations. The scheme financially supports tuition fees, living expenses, contingency grants, and travel allowances for students pursuing Master’s, PhD, and Post-Doctoral studies abroad.

Government data shows that the scholarship has consistently attracted applications for STEM fields, social sciences, humanities, public administration, and other emerging disciplines. The growing interest reflects both rising global aspirations and enhanced awareness about government support mechanisms.

Empowering Women Scholars

The participation of 133 women scholars among the 600 beneficiaries highlights an encouraging gender shift in overseas higher education. Officials note that targeted awareness and improved access to information have contributed to increased applications from women in recent years.

The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has stated that ensuring equitable access for women remains a priority, acknowledging their vital role in contributing to research, development, leadership, and nation-building.

Importance of the National Overseas Scholarship Scheme

The NOS scheme plays a crucial role in bridging educational inequities by opening global platforms for SC students who often face socio-economic constraints at home. By supporting higher learning abroad, the programme strengthens India’s knowledge ecosystem and nurtures future experts across diverse fields.

the scheme has historically enabled scholars to return and contribute to India’s academic, administrative, technological, and professional sectors.

Looking Ahead: Expectations from the Next Cycle

Stakeholders anticipate that the government will refine the selection process, enhance digital transparency, and broaden the list of eligible global institutions. Increased funding and revised guidelines may also be considered to reflect rising international education costs.

As India positions itself as a global knowledge hub, enabling marginalized communities to access premier global universities remains an essential component of inclusive national development.
