MEA Raises Security Concerns
During the meeting at South Block, Indian officials underlined that the safety of diplomatic missions is the responsibility of the host government under the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. The MEA stated that it expects the interim government in Bangladesh to take all necessary steps to ensure the security of the Indian High Commission and associated facilities.
“India completely rejects the false narrative being created by extremist elements regarding recent events in Bangladesh,” the MEA said, adding that it was unfortunate that the Bangladeshi authorities had not shared credible evidence or conducted a thorough investigation into the incidents being cited by protestors.
Visa Services Suspended in Dhaka
In a precautionary move, the Indian visa processing facility in Dhaka announced that all operations would be suspended from 2 p.m. on Wednesday, an hour before the proposed march. Officials said the decision was taken purely in the interest of safety and would be reviewed depending on the ground situation.
The suspension caused inconvenience to hundreds of applicants but underscored the seriousness with which Indian authorities are treating the threat perception around their diplomatic presence in Bangladesh.
Inflammatory Statements Add to Tensions
Tensions between the two neighbours have been exacerbated by a series of inflammatory remarks from Bangladeshi political and student leaders in recent days. Some of these statements, circulated widely on social media, have openly threatened India’s security and territorial integrity, particularly in the northeastern region.
One student leader campaigning for upcoming elections warned against alleged “export of terrorism,” while another political figure controversially described India as a hostile country. Indian officials view such rhetoric as irresponsible and potentially dangerous in an already volatile environment.
Backdrop of Political Unrest
The current diplomatic strain comes amid political turbulence in Bangladesh following violent incidents, including a deadly attack on a student leader earlier this month. Dhaka had accused elements linked to former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League of involvement, a claim that New Delhi strongly objected to.
India has consistently maintained that its relationship with Bangladesh is rooted in the shared history of the 1971 Liberation War and strengthened through development cooperation and people-to-people ties. The MEA reiterated that hostile propaganda and threats undermine this long-standing partnership.
India Seeks Responsible Action
New Delhi has made it clear that while it respects Bangladesh’s sovereignty and democratic processes, it will not tolerate threats to its missions or citizens. The summoning of the High Commissioner signals India’s expectation that Dhaka will act decisively to prevent any breach of security.
Observers note that how the interim Bangladeshi government handles the situation will be closely watched, as both countries navigate a sensitive phase in bilateral relations. Further diplomatic engagement is expected once the immediate security concerns subside.
