Capacity Enhancement in Mumbai Suburban Area
The Mumbai suburban network, handling around 3,200 trains daily, has seen significant augmentation. Projects include platform extensions, additional platforms, pit lines, and stabling lines at key stations such as Bandra Terminus, Mumbai Central, Dadar, Kalyan, Parel, Virar, and Dahanu Road. Platform extension work at 34 stations has also been taken up to accommodate 15-car EMUs.
Under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP) phases II, III, and IIIA, a total investment of over ₹52,724 crore has been sanctioned for projects including new lines, doubling, and capacity upgrades. Furthermore, 238 rakes of 12 cars each with doors are being procured under MUTP-III and IIIA to enhance passenger carrying capacity.
Major Railway Projects in Maharashtra
Significant projects include Pune-Miraj-Londa Doubling (467 km), Manmad-Jalgaon 3rd line (160 km), and Chhindwara-Nagpur Gauge Conversion (150 km), among others. Key ongoing works also encompass Itarsi-Nagpur 4th line (297 km), Wardha-Ballharshah quadrupling (135 km), and Indore-Manmad new line (360 km). The Indian Railways continues to prioritize strategic links, connectivity improvement, and congestion reduction across Maharashtra.
High-Speed and Freight Corridor Projects
Construction of the high-speed bullet train project in Maharashtra is progressing, with 100% land acquisition completed and works on bridges and aqueducts underway. The Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) traverses 178 km in Maharashtra, with 76 km already commissioned. This corridor will enhance cargo and container movement from ports to Delhi NCR, improving overall logistics efficiency.
Indian Railways emphasizes that project sanctioning and execution depend on multiple factors including anticipated traffic, connectivity benefits, socio-economic impact, land acquisition, clearances, and local conditions. Zonal Railways including Central, South Central, South East Central, South Western, and Western Railway Zones manage projects spanning state boundaries, ensuring coordinated execution.
These extensive investments and projects underscore the commitment to modernizing rail infrastructure, enhancing passenger capacity, ensuring safety, and promoting sustainable urban and intercity mobility in Maharashtra.
