CSIR Labs Leading Innovation for Atmanirbhar Bharat
During a review meeting in Tirupati, Dr. Singh assessed the achievements of CSIR laboratories in Chennai and Hyderabad. Highlighting the critical role of translating laboratory research into practical and commercial applications, he underscored the importance of aligning scientific endeavors with national priorities to build a self-reliant India.
The meeting included directors from prominent CSIR labs: CSIR-Central Electrochemical Research Institute (CECRI), CSIR-National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI), CSIR-Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI), CSIR-Structural Engineering Research Centre (SERC), CSIR-Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB), and CSIR-Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT).
Technological Milestones and Industry Collaboration
Dr. K. Ramesha of CSIR-CECRI highlighted breakthroughs in electrochemical technologies, sodium-ion batteries, green hydrogen production, and CO₂ capture. CSIR-NGRI, led by Dr. Prakash, showcased geophysical mapping, Himalayan geo-hazard projects, and critical mineral surveys. CSIR-CLRI, under Dr. P. Thanikaivelan, presented indigenous footwear sizing systems, defence gloves, touch-sensitive gloves for the Air Force, and leather waste upcycling initiatives.
CSIR-SERC, guided by Dr. N. Anandavalli, emphasized offshore renewable energy, disaster-resilient construction, and sustainable materials. CSIR-CCMB, led by Dr. Vinay Nandicoori, showcased genomics and biotechnology advancements across human, animal, and plant health sectors. CSIR-IICT, under Dr. D. Srinivasa Reddy, presented innovations in pharmaceuticals, vaccine adjuvants, next-generation refrigerants, and strong translational research for industry collaboration.
Minister’s Call for Accelerated Innovation
Appreciating the CSIR labs’ efforts, Dr. Jitendra Singh stressed need-based research and science-driven innovation for national development. He urged laboratories to enhance industry partnerships, fast-track technology transfer, and focus on societal applications of research. The Minister also emphasized ensuring proper recognition for CSIR technologies during commercialization.
“CSIR laboratories are pivotal in strengthening India’s scientific capabilities and driving the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat,” Dr. Singh said, highlighting the government’s continued support for India’s innovation ecosystem.
Future Pathways and Strategic Impact
The review underscored CSIR’s commitment to bridging the gap between laboratory research and industrial application. The laboratories outlined future pathways for impactful research, industry engagement, and innovation, with a focus on energy, defence, health, and sustainable technologies. This aligns with India’s broader push for self-reliance in science and technology.
