Bengaluru Weather: IMD Yellow Alert as Cold Wave, Fog Hit Karnataka

RR Team, December 28, 2025December 28, 2025
Bengaluru and large parts of Karnataka continue to experience intense cold conditions as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert for several districts, warning of dense fog, chilly mornings and cold wave-like conditions. The alert comes amid a prolonged dry spell that has led to a sharp drop in minimum temperatures across the state.

According to the IMD, cold conditions are likely to persist in North Interior, Central Interior and South Interior Karnataka over the next few days. Residents in Bengaluru, in particular, are being advised to remain cautious during early morning and late evening hours due to reduced visibility caused by dense fog.

Yellow alert for north Karnataka districts

The IMD has issued a yellow alert for Bidar, Kalaburagi and Vijayapura districts, where cold wave-like conditions are expected to intensify. Night temperatures in these regions are likely to dip significantly, affecting daily routines and agricultural activities.

Dry weather combined with low humidity has contributed to colder nights and relatively warmer afternoons, resulting in a wide gap between minimum and maximum temperatures. Meteorologists say this pattern is typical during winter months but has been more pronounced this season.

Bengaluru temperatures remain low

In Bengaluru, minimum temperatures are expected to hover around 15 degrees Celsius, while maximum temperatures may reach up to 28 degrees Celsius. However, data from the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) indicates that some parts of Bengaluru city and rural areas have already recorded minimum temperatures as low as 8.5 and 8.7 degrees Celsius.

Morning fog has reduced visibility on major roads, prompting commuters to exercise caution. Health experts have also advised vulnerable groups, including children and the elderly, to take preventive measures against cold-related ailments.

Cold spell across interior regions

Several districts across northern Karnataka, including Belagavi, Bagalkot, Ballari, Vijayanagar, Yadgir, Raichur, Gadag, Dharwad, Haveri and Koppal, are expected to witness dry weather accompanied by moderate to severe cold conditions.

In southern interior districts such as Chikkamagaluru and Hassan, foggy mornings are likely as temperatures continue to dip. Coastal Karnataka may experience cloudy skies, but rainfall chances remain low, according to IMD forecasts.

Impact on daily life and precautions

The prolonged cold spell has begun affecting daily life across the state, especially during early morning hours. Reduced visibility due to fog has led to slower traffic movement in urban centres, while rural areas are grappling with chilly nights.

Authorities have urged citizens to wear warm clothing, avoid exposure to cold during late-night and early-morning hours, and ensure adequate care for elderly family members. Farmers have also been advised to monitor crops closely as sudden temperature changes can impact yields.

Cold conditions to persist

Meteorologists say the cold wave and foggy conditions are likely to continue over the next few days, with no immediate relief in sight. Stable atmospheric conditions and lack of significant weather systems are contributing to the persistence of cold nights.

While daytime temperatures may remain comfortable, the sharp contrast with nighttime lows is expected to continue, keeping Karnataka residents braced for chilly mornings as winter tightens its grip on the region.
