NTH, DRDO Sign MoU to Boost Research, Testing Collaboration

RR Team, December 28, 2025December 28, 2025
In a significant step towards strengthening India’s research, testing and quality assurance ecosystem, the National Test House (NTH) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Defence Materials and Stores Research & Development Establishment (DMSRDE), a premier laboratory under the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). The collaboration aims to enhance cooperation in research, testing, training and capacity building, reinforcing India’s push for self-reliance and technological excellence.
The agreement brings together two institutions with deep-rooted expertise in their respective domains. While NTH functions under the Department of Consumer Affairs and plays a critical role in ensuring product quality and standards, DMSRDE contributes cutting-edge research in advanced materials crucial for defence and strategic applications.

Scope and Objectives of the MoU

The MoU outlines a broad framework for collaboration, focusing on joint research and testing initiatives, sharing of laboratory infrastructure, and exchange of scientific and technical expertise. Both organisations will support each other in testing and evaluation services, particularly where specialised facilities or capabilities are required.

Capacity building forms a key pillar of the agreement. Seminars, workshops and structured training programmes will be organised to enhance skills among scientific and technical personnel, ensuring continuous upgradation of knowledge in line with evolving national and global standards.

Strengthening India’s Quality Infrastructure

Established in 1912, NTH is one of India’s oldest quality assurance institutions. It provides testing, inspection and certification services across a wide range of industrial and consumer products, operating through a network of regional laboratories nationwide. As an NABL-accredited and BIS-recognised organisation, NTH plays a vital role in upholding national and international quality benchmarks.

Through this partnership, NTH is expected to gain access to advanced research insights and specialised testing capabilities, further strengthening its ability to support industry, regulators and consumers with reliable and scientifically robust services.

DMSRDE’s Role in Advanced Materials Research

DMSRDE, based in Kanpur, has a legacy dating back to 1929 and is a key centre for research and development in non-metallic materials. Its work spans polymers, composites, elastomers, ceramics, technical textiles, fuels and lubricants, all of which are critical for defence preparedness and technological advancement.

The collaboration with NTH will enable DMSRDE to leverage additional testing and evaluation platforms, fostering cross-institutional learning and accelerating innovation in materials science.

Boost to Atmanirbhar Bharat and National Development

The MoU reflects a shared commitment to Atmanirbhar Bharat by promoting indigenous research, strengthening domestic testing capabilities and reducing dependence on external facilities. Structured institutional collaboration is expected to translate scientific research into practical applications that support industry, defence and consumer safety.

Officials noted that such partnerships are crucial for building a resilient innovation ecosystem, where knowledge sharing and coordinated efforts lead to sustainable national development.

Looking Ahead

With the MoU now in place, both NTH and DRDO’s DMSRDE are expected to identify priority areas for immediate collaboration. The agreement provides a flexible framework that can evolve with emerging technological needs and national priorities.

By combining quality assurance expertise with advanced materials research, the partnership marks an important step towards strengthening India’s scientific infrastructure and reinforcing its position as a knowledge-driven economy.
